  • When gender is more likely to predict pay via self‐enhancement values and working hours

    Open Access•Aline D Masuda, Florencia M Sortheix et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Psychology•2024

Building upon situational strength and biosocial constructionist theories, we test the indirect effect of gender on pay via self‐enhancement values (e.g. power and achievement) and working hours. We also examine the moderating role of country‐level inequality on that mediated link. The results of multilevel regressions with 16,352 respondents nested in 28 European countries support the hypotheses that men are more likely to prioritise self‐enhanc…

  • Covid-19 Preventive Measures in Northern California Jails

Open Access•Yiran E Liu, Christopher LeBoa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: Carceral facilities are high-risk settings for COVID-19 transmission. Little is known about the hidden burden of infection or practical barriers to infection control in these settings, especially in jails. There is also limited research on the mental health impacts of the pandemic among people living and working in carceral facilities. Methods: Between July 8, 2020 and April 30, 2021, we performed SARS-CoV-2 rapid antibody testing and…

  • The global economic costs of substituting dietary protein from fish with meat, grains and legumes, and dairy

Open Access•Ignacio Cazcarro Castellano, Carlos Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2019

This paper estimates the costs to replace fish by protein from meat, from grains and legumes, or from dairy products. We apply the World Trade Model, an input–output model of the interactions among major world regions based on comparative advantage, to analyze alternative scenarios about protein content and sources in global diets. We find that the substitution of fish by meat or dairy entails several trillion U.S. dollars of additional costs ann…

  • Providers' Compliance with the Balanced Counseling Strategy in Guatemala

    Open Access•Federico R León, Carlos Brambila et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The balanced counseling strategy developed in Peru improved family planning care and clients' knowledge of their contraceptive method choice, but few providers adopted it. To expand its use, an algorithm was introduced and training, job aids, and reinforcement were supplied to Ministry of Health providers, most of whom were paraprofessionals, from two areas (40 clinics) in Guatemala. Mystery clients made pretest and post-test visits to these clin…

  • Democratic governance - fairytale or real perspective? Lessons from Central America

    Open Access•Françoise Barten, R Montiel et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2002•Cited by: 8

This paper examines the concept of democratic local governance and its relevance for health development in Central America, a region which was torn apart by conflict in the 1980s. Peace-building has been taking place since the 1990s in a difficult macro-level context, as stabilization and structural adjustment policies in the postwar period have led to drastic state reforms with high social costs for the marginalized population. Innovative experi…
