    Carol J Mackey, William D Sapp•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•2022•References: 17

  • Pre-Hispanic Ridged Fields of the Casma Valley, Peru

    Open Access•Thomas Pozorski, Pozorski et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1983•Cited by: 10

ECAUSE of the aridity of the environment, the desert coast of Peru might seem to be an unusual setting for a ridged field system. Ridged fields in lowlands are generally associated with areas of poor drainage or seasonal inundation. Many valleys along the Peruvian coast with irrigation contain agricultural features like canals as well as sunken gardens and flood-control embankments that are associated with a high water table or inundation. 1 In a…

    Carol J Mackey, Alexandra M Ulana Klymyshyn•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•1981•Cited by: 7

Most information on the Chimu empire has been based on research centering on the capital city of Chan Chan and its environs. The Proyecto Chimu Sur, directed by the authors, has expanded the field of investigation to the site of Manchan in the Casma Valley, a Chimu regional center. Thus far work at Manchan has included the map ping of eighty-five percent of the architecture and the excavation of fifty-three two-by-two meter cuts located in the ad…

  • Peruvian Settlement Pattern Studies and Small Site Methodology

    Open Access•Michael E Moseley, Carol J Mackey•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1972•Cited by: 7•References: 19

Settlement pattern research was introduced to Peruvian archaeology by Gordon R. Willey 2 decades ago. A critical review of this pioneering work points up a basic problem in the structure of analysis. The problem is generated by the use of a simple site taxonomy that is insensitive to the range of human activities that went on at different settlements. Examination of the subsequent course of settlement pattern research shows that this fundamental …
