  • Ciclos de protesto e democracia

    Open Access•Tiago Fernandes, Claudia Araújo et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2021•References: 6

  • The National Student Survey

Maria João Martins, Tiago Reis Marques et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2019

The UK National Student Survey (NSS) is a sound and widely used instrument for assessing students’ academic experiences. We aimed to translate the NSS for Portuguese students and to validate the instrument in a sample of medical undergraduates. The research team translated and adapted the NSS for Portuguese students (NSS-P). The survey was administered on an online platform to 1,256 final-year students at eight Portuguese medical schools. A total…

  • Transition Times in Memory

Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Legacies and Memories in Movements•2018

The second chapter covers the main characteristics of transition time in the four countries: Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. After developing the theoretical model on paths of transition, with a focus on social movement participation, the chapter looks at social movements and protest events as turning points during transition, covering in particular the specific movement actors, their organizational models, and their repertoires of action and…

  • Past and Present

Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Legacies and Memories in Movements•2018

The introductory chapter discusses the concepts of legacy and memory and suggests ways to use them in an analysis of long-term effects of movement participation in the transition to democracy on future generations of movements. First, it looks at the ways in which paths of transitions, with particular attention to movement participation in them, have long-term effects on movements to come by creating institutional change. Second, it considers som…

  • Movement Legacies

Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Legacies and Memories in Movements•2018

Chapter 4 analyzes movements’ legacies. Transitions to democracy create new cultural assumptions that shape the development of social movements: the ways in which activists identify social problems, organize, and protest over time. After conceptualizing the main models of social movement families, it examines their long-term evolution in each of the four countries, with a focus on the path dependency of the transition time but also on turning poi…

  • Movement Memories

Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Legacies and Memories in Movements•2018

Chapter 5 is devoted to the impact of memories of past movements (with an emphasis on transition) on the movements that follow. After singling out main events, places, symbols, and persons that condense the memory of past movements in each country, it analyzes the mnemonic activities of social movements. The chapter looks at the ways in which collective memory is constructed and strategically used by the memory agents—in this case, the anti-auste…

  • Legacies and Memories in Movements

Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Legacies and Memories in Movements•2018

This volume addresses long-term effects of democratic transitions on social movements in Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. From the theoretical point of view, the main focus of reflection is on the long-term impact of eventful moments on social movements, especially the causal mechanisms through which legacies and memories of transformative protest events are produced and reproduced over time, enhancing and constraining contemporary movements’ …

  • Late Neoliberalism and its Discontents in the Economic Crisis

Open Access•Donatella Della Porta, Massimiliano Andretta et al.•BOOK•Late Neoliberalism and Its…•2017

This book analyses protests against the Great Recession in the European periphery. While social movements have long been considered as children of affluent times - or at least of times of opening opportunities - these protests defy such expectations, developing instead in moments of diminishing opportunities in both the economic and the political realms. Can social movement studies still be useful to understanding these movements of troubled time…

  • Rethinking pathways to democracy

    Tiago Fernandes•ARTICLE•Democratization•2015•Cited by: 26•References: 68

This article argues that patterns of civil society in post-authoritarian democracies are the result of divergent pathways to democracy. Through a comparison between contemporary Portugal and Spain, it is shown that revolutionary pathways to democracy have a positive impact on the self-organizing capabilities of popular groups. Two mechanisms contribute to this. First, the fact that the masses are the key actor in the revolutionary process results…

  • Revolução, reforma e democracia

    Open Access•Tiago Fernandes, Tiago Pimenta Fernandes•ARTICLE•Estudos Ibero-Americanos•2015

Portugal and Spain had radically divergent paths to democracy: social revolution in Portugal and reform in Spain. In this paper, the author suggests that a revolutionary path to democracy had a positive effect on self-organizing capabilities of the middle and working classes. Though not always lead to democratic regimes, social revolutions tend to institutionalize mechanisms that encourage civic participation of the masses. Thus, democracies aris…

  • Authoritarian Regimes and Pro-Democracy Semi-Oppositions

    Tiago Fernandes•ARTICLE•Democratization•2007•Cited by: 6

This article discusses the conditions of failure and success of pro-democracy semi-oppositions to authoritarian regimes through a comparative study of the last phase of the Portuguese authoritarian regime (1968–1974). It specifies and reformulates Juan Linz's concept of semi-opposition. In Portugal, contrary to Linz's argument, the moderate pro-democracy semi-oppositions participated in the regime's electoral moments and tended to take the greate…
