  • Yellow versus Orange—Never a Fair Fight

    Open Access•Ed Randall•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2007

British Liberals have a thing about colours, especially yellow and orange. Two publications, separated by over seventy years and known by the colour of their respective covers, mark special periods in the history of British liberalism, times when liberals have appeared to be on the comeback trail. The article sets out to make the case that the authors of The Orange Book (published in 2004) have a great deal to learn from their liberal predecessor…

  • Not that soft or informal

    Ed Randall•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 6

This article is concerned with the dynamics of an increasingly complex and differentiated European regulatory state. It embraces the concept of ‘regulatory regime’ but asserts that this notion needs to be developed further if it is to capture both the complexity and the dynamism of regulatory bodies, including the European Food Safety Authority. The article takes issue with Eberlein and Grande who, in a recent contribution to JEPP (12(1)), critic…

  • Careless with Our Democracy

    Open Access•Ed Randall•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2005

The Representation of the People Act 2000 introduced what has come to be known as 'voting on demand'. In the process it paved the way for an absentee ballot system in Britain that would, in the words of the judge who heard two extraordinary electoral fraud cases in Birmingham in February and March 2005, disgrace a banana republic. Flaws in the policy making process that preceded the largely uncritical acceptance of universal access to postal vote…

  • European Union Health Policy With and Without Design

    Ed Randall•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The article advances four propositions about the evolution of European Union health policy. The propositions reflect the chronological and political development of EU health policies and lead on to a discussion of the future of the EU's role in health and health-related matters. The discussion addresses questions about the effectiveness, appropriateness and legitimacy of EU health actions. These are all matters about which the European Commission…

  • The Politics of Pay Beds

    Tony Butcher, Ed Randall•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1981•Cited by: 1

In 1976 the Labour Government introduced a Bill into the House of Commons which proposed the separation from National Health Service hospitals of accommodation and facilities used for the private practice of medicine. When this measure received the Royal Assent in the same year it marked the culmination of a two year struggle over an issue which had been effectively contained for more than 20 years. Despite the fact that the continued existence o…
