This article focuses on a mountain region in the Swiss Alps that has built an international name for itself since the 1960s upon a specific ski resort, Verbier. From the very beginning, the locals involved in the development of the place were risk-takers, revealing an entrepreneurial spirit that lasts up until now. Over time, the mountain resort has attracted outsiders who share a taste for risk-taking, not only in the field of sport but also in …

  • Introduction: Bureaucratic Routes to Migration: Migrants' Lived Experience of Paperwork, Clerks, and Other Immigration Intermediaries

Open Access•Karine Geoffrion, Geoffrion Karine et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2021•Cited by: 9

For a number of migrant actors, bureaucratic processes related to immigration constitute the greater part of the route toward their aspired destination and significantly shape their experience of migration and forced immobility. This special issue takes a look at the meaningful ways in which migrant actors interact with immigration bureaucracies and at how administrative procedures, with their highly emotional potential, shape in turn the subject…

  • Reception Centres Above. The Mountain, Emblem of the Paradox of the Integration of Asylum Seekers in Switzerland

    Open Access•Viviane Cretton•ARTICLE•Revue de géographie alpine•2020•References: 21

This article analyses “what the mountain does” to people seeking asylum in Switzerland. It focuses on their experiences while they are accommodated in collective reception centres at high altitudes. At the level of Swiss society, asylum seekers are subject to an « integration » injunction, despite the uncertain outcome of their application. When the waiting and uncertainty imposed by the asylum procedure is experienced at an altitude of more than…

  • Performing whiteness: Racism, skin colour, and identity in Western Switzerland

    Viviane Cretton•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2018•Cited by: 21•References: 30

This paper explores the process through which a white nation commonly considered as "raceless" is producing race and racism. Whiteness is a relevant concept to analyse the process of incorporating non-white minorities across everyday social interactions. It explores socio-cultural expressions of white normativity and possible interpretations of the notion of whiteness as an identity in Switzerland and beyond. The paper considers how non-white cit…

  • Find Your Nature” in the Swiss Alps In Search of a Better Life in the Mountains

    Open Access•Andrea Boscoboinik, Viviane Cretton•ARTICLE•Český lid•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 4

This paper reflects upon the nature/culture dichotomy while focusing on mountain landscapes understood as ideal places for a better life. Taking as example a region in the Swiss Alps, it analyses the motivations that lead mostly urban people to settle in mountain regions for the last three decades. Drawing on long-term multi-sited fieldworks in Swiss alpine villages, it highlights new forms of migration, not directly for economic reasons, as well…

  • Traditional Fijian Apology as a Political Strategy

    Open Access•Viviane Cretton•ARTICLE•Oceania•2005

This paper is a reflection upon tradition in Fiji, taking up the question of a controversial ceremony of apology during the 2000 Fijian crisis. A subject of dispute, as much for the social actors as for anthropologists, the notion of tradition that I piece together appears as just such an object of negotiation — between interlocutors but equally between they and the anthropologist. While stressing articulations between customary and constitutiona…
