Differential effects of gender and ethnicity on children’s receptive language scores after a Canadian two-generation preschool program
Preschool programs for socially vulnerable children are believed to affect school readiness and language development but infrequently include follow-up to adolescence; observational measurement of receptive vocabulary is rare. The purpose of this longitudinal cohort study (55 children and 41 parents) was to report the trajectory of receptive vocabulary development for socially vulnerable children of diverse ethnicities (Indigenous, other Canadian…
Influence of the Covid‐19 pandemic on executive skills in Canadians experiencing social vulnerability
The objective of this study was to describe executive skills in clients experiencing social vulnerability in the context of COVID-19 from the perspective of social service agency staff. COVID-19 has required transformational changes to livelihood and day-to-day living. Socially vulnerable individuals are likely to be disproportionally impacted because many have experienced serious early childhood adversity, which may compromise their executive sk…
Assessing resiliency in Canadians experiencing social vulnerability
Deficit models of care for clients experiencing social vulnerability have become increasingly unsustainable; and there is a shift towards models of care that promote and protect resiliency for lifelong health. We defined clients as socially vulnerable if they were living with poverty, mental health problems and addictions, disability, and social isolation. Scales to measure outcomes of resiliency-focused programming have limited reliability and h…
Revisionist Scholarship and Modern Irish Politics
Almost nowhere are politics and history so intimately bound up as in Ireland. Over the course of several hundred years rival political and religious camps have shaped their identities according to particular interpretations of their shared history. As such, any re-examination and revision of Irish history has the potential to have a very real impact upon wider society. Defining revisionism in historiography as a reaction to contemporary conflict …

We ultimately offer some s…
The Devolution of Policing in Northern Ireland
This article looks at the devolution of policing in Northern Ireland. It begins with an outline of the historical context of policing in Northern Ireland and looks at the concept of legitimacy. I examine the motives and rhetoric of those involved in the devolution of policing in Northern Ireland. I also outline the reforms to policing as well as the difficulties faced on the ground. Where appropriate I compare developments in Northern Ireland wit…
Northern Ireland's Normal Politics
As a consequence of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, Unionists and Republicans were to engage in the shared governance of Northern Ireland. Changes in Unionist politics included recognition of the I
The Bishops and Their Flock
This study evaluates the extent to which the 2004 well publicized Catholic Bishops' warnings and the Church Doctrinal Note mandating that parishioners oppose candidates who supported policies contrary to Church doctrine influenced Catholic support for presidential candidate John Kerry. Data were drawn from a 2004 national survey of 493 Catholic adults using random digit dial procedures and commissioned byTimemagazine. Multivariate analyses indica…

Do Black Family Headship Structures Make a Difference in Teenage Pregnancy? A Comparison of One-Parent and Two-Parent Families
The black communities of the United States have a disproportionate number of single-parent families: In point of fact, over one half of all black families with children are single-parent families; the great majority of these single-parent families are headed by females. The fastest growing segment of single parent families is young never-married females who...have incomes below the poverty line. Using a causal model analysis, this particular stud…
