Ethnoarchaeology as a State of Mind
This paper reflects on ethnoarchaeology as a “state of mind” rather than a discrete methodological approach. Drawing on discussions from the “Ethnoarchaeology of Livelihood” conference held in Barcelona in 2024, we situate ethnoarchaeology within broader disciplinary debates on epistemology, social relevance, and the role of archaeology in a rapidly changing world. Ethnoarchaeology Beyond Correlates
In this article, I overview ethnoarchaeology's historic relations to positivism and argue for an explicit redefinition of how we understand the sub-discipline's core objectives. The New Archaeology and, to a lesser extent, Behavioral Archaeology charged ethnoarchaeology with producing "middle range theories" made up of "behavioral-material correlations" that would facilitate archaeological testing.
