  • Perceptions and attitudes of the local people towards bats in the surroundings of the Escaba dam (Tucumán, Argentina)

Open Access•María Cecilia Castilla, Claudia Campos et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobiology and Conservation•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 3

When biodiversity conservation of non-charismatic species is a priority, local people perception and value attributed to species are of vital importance. The presence of a huge colony of bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) in the Escaba dam located at the Yungas forest is an emblematic case for the conservation of bats in Argentina. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception and attitude about the bats of the people living around the Esc…

  • Marriage in Córdoba City (Argentina) in the Late-Colonial and Early-Independent Periods: Homogamy and Surnames as Emerging Features

Open Access•Sonia Edith Colantonio, Sonia Colantonio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2014

Married couples in Córdoba City (Argentina) were studied from the census data of 1778, 1795, 1813, 1822, and 1832. Homogamy regarding ethnic group, juridical status, and the title “Don/Doña” was analyzed through contingence coefficients as well as inbreeding and mate preferences among lineages, using the isonymy and repeated pair methods. Class endogamy was revealed in all groups and homogamy was found for various characteristics. The inbreeding …

  • Contribution of Immigration to Adolescent Fertility in Spain Considering the Reproductive Pattern in the Country of Origin

Sonia Edith Colantonio, Sonia Colantonio et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Adolescent fertility displays a trend that does not follow-and even runs contrary to-the general temporal fertility pattern. Multiple factors determine this trend, including socioeconomic conditions and cultural patterns at both immigrants' place of origin of and their destination. This article analyzes adolescent fertility in Spain with regard to country of maternal origin using records of deliveries (1980-2008) and information from countries wi…

  • Mate Choice in Olivenza: Influence of Border Change on Spanish–portuguese Lineages

Open Access•Jorge Roman-Busto, Vicente Fuster et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2010

The mating pattern in a population determines the next generation gene pool and therefore its genetic structure. Besides socio-cultural and geographic factors, political barriers may influence the formation of couples. The present paper studies how the change of national border affected the mating pattern of Olivenza in Badajoz Province (Spain), which experienced a change of domain from Portugal to Spain in 1801. For the period analysed (1750–185…

Open Access•Bárbara Arias Toledo, Leonardo Galetto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 18

This comprehensive approach suggests that in general terms the cultural environment has a stronger influence than the natural environment on the use of medicinal and edible plants in rural communities of Cordoba (Argentina

  • Socioeconomic, Demographic, and Geographic Variables Affecting the Diverse Degrees of Consanguineous Marriages in Spain

Vicente Fuster, Sonia Edith Colantonio et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 6

In a population the inbreeding coefficient ;ga is determined by the relative incidence of the various degrees of consanguineous marriages—uncle-niece or aunt-nephew (C12), first cousin (C22), first cousin once removed (C23), second cousin (C33)—which may be related to temporal, geographic, demographic, and economic factors. Using published information from Spain corresponding to urban and rural areas, in this article we seek to establish how each…

  • Estimation of Inbreeding From Ecclesiastical Dispensations: Application of Three Procedures to a Spanish Case

Open Access•Vicente Fuster, Sonia Edith Colantonio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2002

The inbreeding coefficient of a population, estimated from ecclesiastical Roman Catholic dispensations, results from the relative contribution of different degrees of relationships (uncle–niece, first cousin, etc.). The interpopulation comparisons of consanguinity patterns may be obscured by the fact that in 1918 the Roman Catholic Church norm regulating the closest marriageable kinship was modified, limiting the application for an ecclesiastical…

  • Interpopulation Relationship by Isonymy: Application to Ethnosocial Groups and Illegitimacy

Sonia Edith Colantonio, Sonia Colantonio et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2002•Cited by: 2

The application of the isonymic method to establish interpopulation relationships is made difficult by such factors as: (1) a small population size; (2) the subdivision of the population into ethnosocial groups; and (3) the existence of individuals born extramaritally. The present study analyzes the validity of the isonymy method in populations where such difficulties exist. Lasker's R(ij) relationship coefficients were calculated in base to mari…

  • Consanguinity in Spain: Socioeconomic, Demographic, and Geographic Influences

    Fuster, Vicente Fuster et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2002•Cited by: 10•References: 1

Information on consanguinity in Spain was reanalyzed in order to obtain a more complete picture of consanguinity patterns by considering temporal, geographical, demographic, and economic factors. To obtain data on consanguineous marriages, we reviewed 106 published references. Only populations with homogeneous geographical characteristics, economic activities, transportation facilities, and the like, were considered. Two-way analysis of variance …

  • Absence of the 9-bp Deletion of Mitochondrial DNA in Pre-Hispanic Inhabitants of Argentina

    Darío Alfredo Demarchi, Graciela M Panzetta-Durtari et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2001•Cited by: 5

We investigated the incidence of the Region V mitochondrial DNA 9-base-pair (bp) deletion from human remains recovered from several archaeological sites and contexts throughout Argentina. Of the 34 samples analyzed, 24 yielded DNA extractions that gave clear amplification results. All of the individuals carried two repeats of the 9 bp, one of which has been shown to be deleted in some individuals of Asian origin and defines mitochondrial lineage …
