  • Autumn edible mushrooms’ euphoria in Dzūkija, SE Lithuania

Open Access•Irfan Ullah, Łukasz Łuczaj et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2026

Dzūkija is the most heavily forested region of Lithuania, and foragers and ethnographers alike describe it as the country’s epicentre of mushroom enthusiasm. We interviewed 34 foragers there in October 2025 (20 women, 14 men; mean age 56 years) to ask why gathering fungi in this region is lived as a collective euphoria rather than as an ordinary subsistence chore, and how that intensity connects to cross-border trade. On the region’s sandy, pine-…

  • From the margins to the core

Open Access•Andrea Pieroni, Animekh Hazarika et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2026

Ethnobiology was not only created as a field to understand the relationship between humans and their environments; it emerged from direct engagement with rural and Indigenous communities. Yet the great paradox is that, despite its field-based origins, the discipline continues to be reproduced within urban academic spaces that often exclude those who are assumed to be at the very heart of knowledge production. In this editorial, we do not simply p…

  • When minority language persistence is not enough

Open Access•Irfan Ullah, Mousaab Alrhmoun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2026

Local ecological knowledge is an essential element of the Alpine biocultural diversity and is often linked to minority languages. However, its continuity does not necessarily correspond to the persistence of these languages. This study investigates how knowledge of wild plants (and mushrooms) is transmitted and transformed among three minority-language communities in the Italian Alps: Cimbrian, Mòcheno, and Ladin speakers. Ethnobotanical data wer…

  • The New Face of Ethnobotany

    Open Access•Cheikh Yebouk•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2025

Today, ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology bridge ancestral knowledge of traditional curative and therapeutic practices with current scientific understanding. Ethnobotany has undergone significant transformation over the past several decades. It has evolved from primarily documenting traditional medicinal uses, vernacular names, and plant-based activities to a multidisciplinary, hypothesis-driven field. Modern ethnobotany now serves as a vital brid…

  • Concepts and methods

Open Access•Fatima Zahrae Redouan, Cheikh Yebouk et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2025

Background: Northern Morocco is rich in biodiversity, notably medicinal plants. which considered the primary source of medicines and drug discovery due to their secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds that are pharmacologically applicable against several diseases. This study aims to design and develop a database to document the therapeutic uses practiced by the population of the PNTLS (catalog of medicinal plants), analyze the information o…

  • A New Index for Measuring Practical Knowledge Diversity

    Open Access•Cheikh Yebouk•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2025

Background: Since quantitative indices are essential for quantifying the depth of ethnobotanical knowledge, most current measures aim to account for the complexity of practical knowledge combinations by focusing on species importance or consensus. One new way to measure cultural variation in plant-use knowledge is the Combination Use Variation Index (CUDI), which is introduced in this study. Methods: CUDI is calculated by taking the number of uni…

  • Ethnobotany Research and Applications

    Open Access•Cheikh Yebouk•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2025

Ethnobotany Research and Applications (ERA), established in 2003, has consistently adhered to its mission of providing free, open-access, and rapidly published research materials worldwide. Over more than 20 years, ERA has grown significantly, publishing nearly 30 volumes and expanding its scope to include ethnobiology, ethnomycology and ethnozoology. Initially hosted at the University of Hawaii, it is now managed by Ilia State University in Geor…

  • The status and perception of medicinal plants by local population of Adrar province (Northern Mauritania)

Open Access•Cheikh Yebouk, Fatima Zahrae Redouan et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2023

Background: In the province of Adrar (northern Mauritania), there is significant interest in medicinal plants and their use. However, the utilization of herbal medicines has been largely underestimated, with little or no scientific data regarding the status, perception of inhabitants of northern Mauritania, confidence in the healing properties of medicinal plants, and the conservation of traditional medicinal heritage of the local population. Met…

Background: The present ethnobotanical-ethnopharmacological study of plants used to treat ailments of the digestive system was carried out in the north of Morocco. The study aims to collect data on the plants used, their vernacular names, the parts used, and their modes of preparation and administration. Methods: Surveys and interviews were carried between 2014 and 2017 in Talassemtane National Park, North of Morocco. Data were collected through …
