Iranian herbal distillates (Hydrosols)
Background: Iranian herbal distillates are traditional aqueous products of hydro-distillation with centuries of use in Persian medicine, culinary practices, and cultural rituals. They are documented in historical texts such as those by Avicenna and remain widely employed as beverages, folk remedies, and flavoring agents. This study aims to comprehensively document the botanical sources, traditional uses, production methods, and industrial potenti…
Integrating Spatial Availability into ethnobotanical research
Background: Ethnobotanical research has traditionally emphasized the documentation of cultural importance and patterns of plant use through indices such as the Relative Frequency of Citation and Use Value. While these metrics effectively capture cultural relevance within specific knowledge systems, they overlook an important dimension: the spatial availability of plant species beyond their original ethnobotanical context. Consequently, species wi…
Exploring the myth of Lake Saveh on the Iranian Plateau
This study presents a multidisciplinary reconstruction of a paleolake’s Holocene evolution in Iran’s Central Plateau, synthesizing sedimentological, geochronological, archeological, and historical evidence. Our findings confirm the existence of a large paleolake (~16–14 ka) in the northern plateau, with episodic desiccation and recharge. Lake levels declined by 250 m between 11.5 and 8.2 ka, stabilizing at ~850 m elevation. The 8.2 ka climatic co…
Documentation of medicinal plant use in Karaj, Iran
Background: Urban ethnobotany provides critical insights into how traditional plant knowledge adapts within modern societies. Despite Iran’s rich ethnomedicinal heritage, little attention has been paid to cities such as Karaj, where traditional and modern herbal markets coexist. Methods: Between 2018 and 2024, we surveyed 25 herbal outlets across 12 districts of Karaj. A total of 186 medicinal plant samples were collected, identified, and deposit…
Edible species of Boraginales
Background: The order Boraginales comprises numerous species known for their medicinal properties, but their role as food sources remains understudied and largely confined to local traditions. This review aims to systematically document edible species within this order, highlighting their nutritional, cultural and economic significance and advocating for their broader integration into global food systems. Methods: This study compiles data from di…
