  • Human Life History is Shaping Embodied Medicinal Plant Knowledge Across the Lifespan

Open Access•Jorge Izaquiel Alves De Siqueira, Patrícia Muniz De Medeiros et al.•ARTICLE•Human Nature•2026

In this study, we draw on theoretical frameworks from Life History Theory, and Embodied Capital Theory to assess the role of human life history in shaping local medical systems (LMSs) across the lifespan. We focus specifically on medicinal plants, as they can enhance individual fitness and contribute to overall health. Our central research question is: What role does human life history play in the construction of LMSs? To address this, we conduct…

  • Do socioeconomic factors and local human preference determine the hybridization of knowledge in local medical systems

Open Access•Jorge Izaquiel Alves De Siqueira, Gustavo Taboada Soldati et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 45

Our findings provide further evidence of the complementarity between different medical systems and demonstrate that socioeconomic factors can affect local knowledge and are responsible for differences in individual propensity to hybridize distinct medical systems

Background: Since its origin, the human being as a biocultural species has been observing the natural world and forming a set of practices, beliefs and cosmovisions associated with its environment. These practices have been transmitted between generations, primarily through oral storytelling, and have played an important role in human evolutionary history. Narratives and short stories about the natural world have also been essential for the maint…

Open Access•Jorge Izaquiel Alves De Siqueira•ARTICLE•Ethnobotany Research and…•2018
