  • Room for Improvement in the Video Conferencing ‘Space

Open Access•Naomi Jacobs, Naomi Jane Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2021

The Covid-19 pandemic led to a dramatic shift in the nature of work and collaboration for our design-led research group. In this paper, we describe the experimental use of the Gather Town platform for a variety of communication and collaboration activities. This alternative to standard video conferencing software uses spatial metaphors and attempts to regain some of the affordances of physical co-location such as serendipity and a sense of presen…

  • Near Future School

    Open Access•James Duggan, James R Duggan et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 36

This article reports on one part of an on-going project, the Near Future School, which aims to translate and explore the potential of participatory design fiction practices for use with young people and those that work with them to explore near future scenarios of education that open up alternative and plural futures in the context of processes of foreclosure in a neoliberalising society. The focus here is to explore the practical and ethical iss…

  • Operationalizing Design Fiction with Anticipatory Ethnography

Open Access•Joanne Lindley, Joseph Lindley et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Transmuting the entanglement of situations, contexts, artifacts and people, designers mediate the relationship between 'what could be' and 'what is'. All design, then, has an implicit relationship with the future. Latency will always exist as part of this relationship, between the inception of a design concept, development and delivery of that concept, and the manifestation of that concept's potential impact on the world. As we move further into …

  • Shared Ethnography of Shared Cities

Open Access•Robert Potts, Dhruv Sharma et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2015•References: 15

This paper aims to foreground issues for design ethnographers working in urban contexts within the smart-city discourse. It highlights ethnography's role in a shared urban future by exploring how ethnographers might pave the way for envisioning digital infrastructure at the core of Smart City programs. This paper begins by asking whether urban development practitioners can design for inclusive interaction with Smart Urban Infrastructure. The rese…

  • Anticipatory Ethnography

Open Access•Joanne Lindley, Joseph Lindley et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 12

Here we consider design ethnography, and design fiction. We cast these two approaches, and the design endeavor itself, as forward-looking processes. Exploring the means by which design ethnography and design fiction derive their value reveals the potential for a mutually beneficial symbiosis. Our thesis argues that design ethnography can provide design fiction with the methods required to operationalize the practice in industry contexts. Meanwhil…
