Estimates of life history parameters in a high latitude, arid‐country vervet monkey population
We present data on life history parameters from a long‐term study of vervet monkeys in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Estimates are presented of age at first conception for females and age at natal dispersal for males, along with the probability of survival to adulthood for infants born during the study, female reproductive life‐span, reproductive output (including lifetime reproductive success for a subset of females), and inter‐birth interval …
Social induction and the developmental trajectory of participation in intergroup conflict by vervet monkeys
We assess the proposition that intergroup conflict (IGC) in non-human primates offers a useful comparison for studies of human IGC and its links to parochial altruism and prosociality. That is, for non-linguistic animals, social network integration and maternal influence promote juvenile engagement in IGC and can serve as the initial grounding for sociocultural processes that drive human cooperation. Using longitudinal data from three cohorts of …
Religiosity and religious and spiritual struggle and their association to depression and anxiety among adolescents admitted to inpatient psychiatric units
This study examines the relationship between religious and spiritual (R/S) struggle and religiosity with depression and anxiety in adolescents admitted to inpatient psychiatric units of a pediatric hospital in the Midwest of the United States. We administered four self-reported scales to 71 adolescents (ages 13-17) to assess religiosity, R/S struggle, depression, and anxiety. The prevalence of R/S struggle among this population was high (88.73%).…
The Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on family leisure activities of working parents with pre-school aged children
The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdown in South Africa led to the closure of leisure spaces, and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, forcing parents who were non-essential employees to work from home. This created a crisis for families, with significant consequences for family leisure time and activities. This paper explored the impact of the pandemic for parents with pre-school aged children (PSAC) and aimed to identify changes…

App Imperialism: The Political Economy of the Canadian App Store
In this paper, we introduce the notion of app imperialism by exploring the political economy of the Canadian iOS App Store. Building on Dal Yong Jin's concept of "platform imperialism", we argue that US companies dominate global app stores through the systematic acquisition of capital resources. App imperialism marks the outsized economic footprint and influence of US companies in national app stores. Using a longitudinal financial dataset, we qu…
Lost in the App Store: The State of the Canadian Game App Economy
This commentary discusses the political economy of apps. The authors found that Canadian-made game apps are notably absent in the Canadian App Store. This should be both worrying and surprising, as Canada has a relatively sizable game industry. While policy conversations on digital transformation focus on emerging technology, the authors point toward the power and politics of digital platforms as one of the key issues preventing growth in the Can…

American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains . By Dan Flores
Dan Flores fills many gaps in the big history narrative of the Great Plains with American Serengeti. For those determined to understand the history of a vast North American ecosystem, there is much more than this one book to explore, but in order to explore the many layers of human and pre-human interactions of the natural world, this one book is a must read. In chapters that focus on animals species, including pronghorns, coyotes, horses, grizzl…
Separate but correlated: The latent structure of space and mathematics across development.
The relations among various spatial and mathematics skills were assessed in a cross-sectional study of 854 children from kindergarten, third, and sixth grades (i.e., 5 to 13 years of age). Children completed a battery of spatial mathematics tests and their scores were submitted to exploratory factor analyses both within and across domains. In the within domain analyses, all of the measures formed single factors at each age, suggesting consistent,…

Reduction of socio‐economic injustice: Four scenarios to the year 2001
This empirical study is a continuation of the Limits‐to‐Violence project started in 1975 by the Canadian Peace Research Institute. The LIV project sought to model three kinds of violence‐civil war, international war, and socio‐economic injustice‐in an effort to limit global violence in the future. The research reported here is concerned with reducing socio‐economic injustice, or so‐called "structural" violence. Four scenarios are calculated for t…
