Bridging Ethnography and Path-finding Business Opportunities
While ethnography has been integrated into the design research, new product development and corporate strategy, it has been less well integrated into path-finding for new business opportunities. Current ways of addressing culture in the sociology of markets are incomplete. One approach treats culture as constitutive of markets (markets are culture), while the other treats culture as something affecting markets (markets have culture). Drawing on ethnographic data collected on the trading floor of a large, Midwestern commodities exchange, I show how attention to variations in the pace of work within an overwhelmingly male-dominated workplace reveals different repertoires of gender. Animated analytical and partially discretized solutions to the one-dimensional magnetic diffusion equation
An educational computer program which takes advantage of the graphical and computational capabilities of personal computers in order to help students visualize the dynamic phenomenon of magnetic diffusion is discussed. The program is capable of animating analytical and numerical steady-state solutions to a one-dimensional magnetic diffusion equation. A personal computer program for analysis of electrostatic boundary value problems, based upon charge simulation, is described.
