Negotiating expertise in Nepal’s post-earthquake disaster reconstruction
One characteristic feature of post-earthquake recovery in Nepal after the 2015 earthquakes was an owner-driven approach to house reconstruction in the most devastated rural regions, which combined a commitment to appropriate technology and building safety. To implement the model, engineering expertise was deployed throughout the affected areas involving over 3000 engineers deployed by the government’s National Reconstruction Authority (NRA). This…
A culture of informality
Despite a history of labor militancy in past decades, Nepal’s large construction sector remains unorganized and lacks social protection, prompted by high levels of informality. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among construction laborers in Kathmandu, this article argues that labor subsumption to capital in the construction industry takes place through a systemization of expertise through which access to work is negotiated. I show how this “cultur…
Brokering labour
Although there is a rich tradition for labour studies in anthropology, little attention has so far been paid to the markets that connect prospective employees with places of work. In this article, I show that places of labour mobilization become sites of brokerage that index the complicated politics through which labour is rendered available to industry, particular in the context of non-formalized employment relations. Utilizing a political econo…
Rethinking the Himalayas, 2nd Annual Nordic Himalaya Research Network Conference, 9 May 2019, University of Copenhagen
the second Annual Conference of the Nordic Himalaya Research Network (NHRN) brought together researchers in the Nordic region and beyond who work on all aspects of research related to the Himalaya region spanning India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. With the theme of 'Rethinking the Himalayas', the conference offered a platform for scholars of the Himalayas to present their research and was particularly intended to be a supportive meeting point for em…

Introduction
As a fluid age cohort and a social category between childhood and adulthood – and hence with tenuous links to the status quo – youth are variously described as ‘at risk’, as victims of precarious and unpredictable circumstances, or as agents of social change who embody the future. From this future-oriented generational perspective, youth are often mobilised to individually and collectively imagine, enact and embody Utopian futures as alternatives…
Utopias of youth
This article investigates the changing role of youth in Nepali Maoism following their transformation from a guerrilla army to a parliamentary party after 2006. Drawing on 1 year of ethnographic fieldwork, I trace how the category of youth gained renewed relevance after the war and allowed the Maoist movement to sidestep complicated issues of class in the urban fabric. Building on a Gramscian framework of subaltern politics and Harvey’s ‘dialectic…
Etik 3.0
Dan V. Hirslund: Ethics 3.0. Blindness and Visions of Anthropological Knowledge This article formulates a notion of ethics based on the interests that our concepts represent. It identifies a distinction between two dominant understandings of ethics in (Danish) anthropology. Ethics 1.0 creates the fundament for the construction of anthropological knowledge in the dialectical and inductive meeting between fieldworker and informant. Ethics 2.0 seeks…
Nordic Himalaya Research Network (NHRN) First Inaugural Meeting
On May 7, 2018, the inaugural meeting for the newly established Nordic Himalaya Research Network was held at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen
Fighting back against dispossession
Militant collectivity
A stubborn, anticapitalist movement, Maoism has persisted in the global periphery for the many past decades despite its tainted image as a progressive alterpolitical platform. This article seeks to ponder why this is the case by looking at a recent and popular example of leftist radical politics in the MLM tradition. I argue that contemporary Nepali Maoism is offering a militant, collectivist, antiliberal model for confronting capitalist and stat…
Judith Pettigrew, Maoists at the Hearth
When, on February 4 1996, an obscure faction of Nepal's left-movement, submitted a 40-point memorandum to the government with the threat of initiating an armed revolt unless its ambitious demands for a completely restructured polity were immediately addressed, few had anticipated the decade-long militarized conflict that was to engulf most of the country and which left over 16,000 people dead and 1,300 missing. The history of Nepal's Maoist upris…
