  • Climate adaptation plans and “green jobs”: Challenges for implementing a responsive, multi-skilled workforce in Worcester, Massachusetts

    Open Access•Varun Bhat, Sarah Strau•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2025•References: 2

Cities across the United States are affected by climate change impacts, and several cities have adopted climate adaptation plans to respond to this growing threat. These plans outline interventions that require a multi-skilled workforce working towards "green" or sustainable goals. However, the "green jobs" linked to these goals are ill-defined and misunderstood among employers and job seekers and can cause gaps in implementing the interventions …

  • Teachers' Professional Knowledge for Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Assessing the Outcomes of Teacher Education

Open Access•Johannes König, Sandra Lammerding et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Teacher Education•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 54

Despite an increasing research interest in subject-specific teacher knowledge, the scientific understanding regarding teachers' professional knowledge for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is very limited. This study therefore applies standardized tests to directly assess content knowledge (CK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and general pedagogical knowledge (GPK) of preservice teachers for TEFL in Germany from different progra…

  • Relationships that Heal: Beyond the Patient-Healer Dyad in Mayan Therapy

    Mónica Berger-González, Ana Vides-Porras et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Biomedicine fosters particular styles of interaction and behaviors, with the therapeutic relationship seen as occurring between a doctor and patient. In contrast, where alternative modalities of healing are practiced, relationships go beyond a dyadic interaction and include wider social networks. In this article, we propose the existence of a 'therapeutic unit' in Maya healing practices in Guatemala that binds healer, wellness seeker, family, and…

  • Are cultures endangered by climate change? Yes, but

    Open Access•Sarah Strau•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Culture, from an anthropological perspective, encompasses all learned and shared aspects of life in human societies. Included is not only ‘high culture’—the arts and literature—but also science, technology, and more practical, everyday activities and beliefs: how to plant a potato or pray for rain, to seek good luck in battle or on exams at school. Cultures are not static; they change in response to wars, plagues, new inventions—as well as to env…

  • An ill wind: The Foehn in Leukerbad and beyond

    Open Access•Sarah Strau, Sarah Strauss•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 10

The Foehn is a warm, dry, downslope wind found on the lee side of mountains; the type-location for this adiabatic wind is the European Alps. In the Swiss village of Leukerbad, residents are quite familiar with the Foehn, which sweeps regularly through the main Rhone valley from the southeast. Leukerbad, located in a side valley, rarely experiences the full force of the Foehn, but the effects of this wind are well known: people say that the Foehn …

  • Locating yoga

    Sarah Strau•CHAPTER•Constructing the Field•2003

Here I am, in ‘The Field’ again, trying to make sense of what’s going on. Despite being in my native country, I feel nearly as overwhelmed as when I first arrived in India in 1990. Walking around at the opulent Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, peering into meeting rooms and watching the people rushing in all directions, it’s hard to take it all in. The thick program for the second Parliament of the World’s Religions-100 years after the first-is \as…

  • The Master's Narrative: Swami Sivananda and the Transnational Production of Yoga

    Sarah Strau•ARTICLE•Journal of Folklore Research•2002•Cited by: 11•References: 4

Over the past century, the set of ideas and practices known generically as yoga has broadened to accommodate a range of activities and practitioners quite different from those that characterized earlier forms of this discipline. The stories that surround Swami Sivananda, an Indian guru who popularized yoga through English-language publications beginning in the 1930s, help to demonstrate the process by which yoga has become a transnational phenome…

The Divine Life Society (DLS) is a spiritual organization founded by Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, India. Sivananda's DLS, including associated centers across India and abroad, has figured prominently in expanding the role of yoga as a tool for the development of modern India. In this paper, Sivananda's own poetry and the many pamphlets and books produced by this noted swami, his contemporaries, and his successors through the 20th century in Indi…
