Jesuit Impact on Potawatomi Acculturation
Missionary groups, including the Jesuits were originally entrusted with civilizing the Native Americans. In the 1830s two Potawatomi villages offer an interesting contrast to the acculturation efforts of the Jesuits. The success of one mission and the failure of the other was the result of a complex mixture of historical, cultural, and ideological variables.
