  • The River That Swallowed the Ringwood Prehistoric Landscape

    Open Access•Jessica Taylor, Catherine Langdon et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2025•References: 3

In March 2022, two geoarchaeological boreholes were drilled within the Avon Valley at the site of Jubilee Gardens, Ringwood, Hampshire. The works were commissioned from Connect Archaeology by VolkerFitzpatrick on behalf of their client, National Highways, as part of the A31 road widening and junction improvement works. One sequence was selected for palaeoenvironmental analysis and radiocarbon dating, aiming to provide evidence for landscape devel…

  • Modelling Prehistoric Topography and Vegetation in the Lower Thames Valley, UK

Phil Stastney, Rob Scaife et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2021•References: 14

Multi-proxy investigations at 2 Pier Road, North Woolwich, London, UK, have revealed deposits spanning the Middle-Late Holocene from the late Mesolithic (c. 4360 cal BC) onwards. Pollen data show an Elm Decline at c. 4210–3950 cal BC followed by landnám clearances at c. 4210–3910 cal BC and c. 3710–3030 cal BC and the first appearance of cereal at c. 3540–3030 cal BC. These events are potentially contemporary with the construction of nearby Neoli…

  • A palaeoenvironmental context for Terminal Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic activity in the Colne Valley

Michael Grant, Craig Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Multi-proxy analyses from floodplain deposits in the Colne Valley, southern England, have provided a palaeoenvironmental context for the immediately adjacent Terminal Upper Palaeolithic and Early Mesolithic site of Three Ways Wharf. These deposits show the transition from an open cool environment to fully developed heterogeneous floodplain vegetation during the Early Mesolithic. Several distinct phases of burning are shown to have occurred that a…

  • Holocene environmental changes in the Lower Thames Valley, London, UK

    Open Access•Nicholas Branch, Robert Batchelor et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 10

A radiocarbon-dated multiproxy palaeoenvironmental record from the Lower Thames Valley at Hornchurch Marshes has provided a reconstruction of the timing and nature of vegetation succession against a background of Holocene climate change, relative sea level movement and human activities. The investigation recorded widespread peat formation between c. 6300 and 3900 cal. yr BP (marine ‘regression’), succeeded by evidence for marine incursion. The mu…
