  • Bestselling ballads and the Bible in England, c .1560–1700

    Open Access•Christopher Marsh•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2025

This article reconsiders the relationship between ballads and Bibles in England during the early modern period. It concentrates on the religious ballads within a group of 120 songs that have recently been identified as particularly successful. These cheap publications suggest that English people, right through into the eighteenth century, were notably interested in songs that connected with the vernacular Bible. This challenges several long-estab…

  • Protestant Martyrs in Three Best-Selling English Ballads, c. 1540–1710

    Open Access•Christopher Marsh•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•2025•References: 1

This article examines three highly successful English broadside-ballads about Protestant martyrs of the mid-sixteenth century and seeks to explain their evident popularity. It argues that ballads were very important in encouraging people to think about martyrs and identify as Protestants, and that the highlighted examples have been either overlooked or underestimated by scholars. The songs also shed new light on commonplace religious tastes and p…

  • Beneath the Backbone of the World: Blackfoot People and the North American Borderlands, 1720-1877

    Christopher Marsh, Christopher B Marsh•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•2022

Prior to the publication of Ryan Hall’s Beneath the Backbone of the World, scholars and students interested in the history of the Blackfoot and the fur trade between 1720 and 1870 needed to consult the important works of many authors: John Ewers, Hugh Dempsey, David Wishart, John Milloy, Lesley Wischmann, and Ted Binnema. Employing crisp prose and engaging vignettes, Hall crafts a coherent and interesting story of how the Blackfoot “survived, suf…

Open Access•Nathan J Harrison, Nathan Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2021

Sleeping tree selection and related behaviours of a family group and a solitary female siamang ( Symphalangus syndactylus ) were investigated over a 5-month period in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. We performed all day follows, sleeping tree surveys and forest plot enumerations in the field. We tested whether: (1) physical characteristics of sleeping trees and the surrounding trees, together with siamang behaviours, supported selection based on pre…

  • Napoleon and British Song, 1797–1822, by Oskar Cox Jensen

    Open Access•Christopher Marsh•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2018

In this lively and engaging study, Oskar Cox Jensen surveys and analyses a neglected corpus of approximately 400 songs that circulated in England before, during and after the Napoleonic Wars. These songs, according to the author, have been seriously neglected by scholars, particularly but not only in their musical dimensions. This is a book about the experience of singing and, fittingly, it is accompanied by sixty-two recordings, easily accessibl…

This paper investigates the representation of marital relations in some of the most successful broadside ballads published in seventeenth-century England. It explains the manner in which these have been selected as part of a funded research project, and it proceeds to question an existing historiographical emphasis on ballads in which marriages were portrayed as under threat due to a combination of wifely failings (scolding, adultery, violence) a…

  • Best-Selling Ballads and their Pictures in Seventeenth-Century England

    Christopher Marsh•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2016•Cited by: 1

This article examines the woodcut pictures that appeared on best-selling ballads published in London during the seventeenth century. One hundred and twenty-five of the period’s top ballads are identified using a range of criteria and a selection of these publications is then studied in multiple editions. It is argued that the dismissive attitude to the pictures that has often been adopted by scholars is urgently in need of revision. The woodcut p…

  • Religion and the State in Russia and China: Suppression, Survival, and Revival

Christopher Marsh, Christopher L Marsh•BOOK•Religion and the State in Russia…•2011

Lucidly and engagingly written, Christopher Marsh's book is a landmark contribution to the growing literature on secularization and desecularization in the modern world. Previous studies have typically focused on a single country or religious movement, while there has been precious little comparative, cross-national and cross-civilizational research. Yet, without comparative research, it is impossible to theorize desecularization and detect its b…

This book provides an original contribution to the debate, by discussing the relationship bet…

Paul Whitfield White begins this stimulating book with an account of the staging of the hit play Mucedorus at Witney (Oxfordshire) in 1652. It is an episode to which he returns at several points. The players were a troupe from the nearby parish of Stanton Harcourt and their performance might never have come to our notice but for the fact that several hundred audience members crowded into an upstairs chamber at the White Hart inn, causing the floo…

China's process of religious liberalization has certainly seen its share of ups and downs over the past three decades, with strong state reaction to groups such as the Falun Gong and the continued persecution of the house-church movement. It is, however, beyond dispute that the system as a whole has been greatly liberalized during China's period of gaige kaifang (reform and opening).
