  • Nir-Ft Raman Spectroscopy of the Mummified Skin of Chiribaya Mummies From Peru

Open Access•Monika H Gniadecka, Monika Gniadecka et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2001

Near infrared Fourier transform (NIR-FT) Raman spectroscopy is an analytical, non-destructive technique based on analysis of laser light reflected from the sample. It provides information about the molecular structure of the sample. NIR-FT Raman spectroscopy was employed here to investigate molecular structure of skin samples from mummified bodies from the Chiribaya culture from the Southern Peruvian desert (1500 years before present). In the spe…

Jorgen Meldgaard, Jens Peder Hart Hansen et al.•BOOK•Greenland Mummies•1991•Cited by: 14

In 1972, two brothers on a hunting expedition in Greenland, 450 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, discovered the graves of six women and two children who had died more than 500 years ago. They had been buried in the traditional Inuit way, dressed in warm clothing and provided with the goods needed for their journey to the Land of the Dead. A combination of low ground temperature and dry air preserved their bodies and their clothing in excell…

  • Collagen and glycosaminoglycans in mummified skin

Thorkil Ammitzbøll, R Möller et al.•ARTICLE•Meddelelser om Grønland•1990

Two tombs among the rocks at Qilakitsoq, Greenland, contained the 500-year-old bodies of eight Eskimos mummified by a natural drying process. Samples of the human skin and sealskin were analysed for the content of collagen and glycosaminoglycans which are characteristic macromolecules of skin. The skin of the Eskimo mummies was well-preserved. In some respects, the macromolecules of the skin were identical to those of fresh human skin. Well-prese…
