Leo Spitzer was born in 1887 into a prosperous Viennese Jewish family. He took a doctorate in Romance languages at the University of Vienna with a thesis on "Word Coinage as a Stylistic Means on the Example of Rabelais," attaining the status of Privatdozent (just short of professor) at the age of 26.
