  • The trees for life day in the Netherlands and the ritual reference of pilgrimage 1

    In the Netherlands, the Trees for Life day represents a living memorial to loved ones who have died from cancer. Since 2000, the next of kin of cancer victims have come together on the last Saturday of November to remember them: by walking, keeping silence, and planting trees in a young forest. This article formulates a number of exploratory observations on this case of an emerging ritual. Themes include: the ritual and its contextual framework, …

    Following a brief sketch of a theoretical framework the author examines a selection of contemporary Dutch pilgrims’ accounts.
