Background: Disparities in substance use treatment access and outcomes between communities with racially, economically, linguistically, and mentally/physically marginalized identities and more privileged populations are staggering. Communities of color lack access to culturally resonant treatment options that incorporate the role of racial oppression, address the chronic effects of stress on the nervous system, provide culturally-and linguistical…
Investigating teacher influence on student engagement in high schools
Student engagement is a pivotal contributor to academic achievement, retention, and well-being, and yet the role of teacher influence on engagement is poorly understood. This is in part due to the contextual and ‘hidden’ nature of student engagement, and as such, levels of student engagement are assumed through observable factors such as attendance and conduct. It is also due to the difficulty in mapping student engagement simultaneously with und…
When flow meets business
Flow, a state of mind that occurs when persons are deeply immersed in an activity, plays an important role in enhancing the tourist experience through a variety of activities. Historically, flow is explored from the perspective of how tourists' experience the state, while little attention has been given to how tourism businesses can facilitate flow states to improve their product offerings. This prelminary study explores a tourism business in Tas…
Segregation and success in Tasmanian primary school sport carnivals
Australian schooling is one of the most segregated systems in the OECD, with much focus on the inequality between schools from poorer areas compared with those from wealthier suburbs. These inequalities have been explored in terms of infrastructure and funding, as well as their relative academic achievement. Previous research has also found that children from more disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to have poorer health than their wealthie…

Life cycle assessment of salinity gradient energy recovery using reverse electrodialysis
This study is the first comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) of reverse electrodialysis (RED), a technology that converts salinity gradient energy into electricity. Our goal is to identify RED system components of environmental concern and provide insights on potential environmental impacts. We conduct an attributional LCA of two RED scenarios: large‐scale energy generation from natural bodies of water and smaller‐scale energy generation fro…
It takes a special type of teacher. An investigation into the capabilities of staff working with disengaged students
The primary purpose of Flexi schools in Australia is to serve students for whom traditional school has not been a good fit and are largely comprised of students who have disengaged and disconnected from traditional education. The reasons behind disengagement are diverse, but young people in Flexis typically have in common a negative prior experience of school, are more likely to have been affected by poverty, marginalisation, trauma, and to exper…
It showed me that I was not dumb’ the role of flexible learning programmes in enabling cognitive (re)-engagement
This study investigates the change in students’ cognitive engagement as a result of participation in a Flexible Learning Programme. Using an understanding of engagement as both a process and a relationship between the students and their school, we sought to determine whether students’ perception of competency, willingness to engage, and establishment of learning goals were different after the programme compared with before enrolment. To achieve t…
It is my decision, and it's really up to me. But they wanted me to do it’
This study explores how choice to enter a reengagement programme was experienced and understood by students and staff. In seeking to understand choice, we sought to gain insight into one design element that is considered to be vital for effective reengagement programmes: namely, that they are voluntary or choice-based. We interviewed 12 students and 5 staff who were involved in a reengagement programme that was underpinned by philosophy of choice…

Living with Water in the Era of Climate Change
The research examines the shift from flood-resistant policies and plans to flood resilience. We use a case study of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina to illustrate this unfolding process and the emergence of a “living with water” approach to green infrastructure. The article highlights the challenges of this shifting policy landscape through the case of the Lafitte Greenway, a green infrastructure project that transformed a three-mile corridor …

Introduction The centrality of behaviour change in combating HIV has been recognized since the beginning of the epidemic. One of the most widespread approaches to behaviour change used in the battle against HIV/AIDS has been information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns focused on raising awareness about the virus and the syndrome, avoiding behaviours associated with increased risk, and providing behavioural strategies for the caregive…

Legal Status and the Stability of Coresidential Unions
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972, we examine the effect of the legal status of coresidential unions on the likelihood of dissolution. We find that legal unions are much more stable than nonlegal unions. In addition, current legal status is more important for predicting stability of union than is legal status at the initiation of the union. We also find that the effect of current legal status remains…
