Who Gets Custody Now? Dramatic Changes in Children’s Living Arrangements After Divorce
This article reexamines the living arrangements of children following their parents’ divorce, using Wisconsin Court Records, updating an analysis that showed relatively small but significant increases in shared custody in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These changes have accelerated markedly in the intervening years: between 1988 and 2008, the proportion of mothers granted sole physical custody fell substantially, the proportion of parents shari…
Exploring A New Family Form - The Shared Time Family
This is a report of a study in the state of Wisconsin of a random sample of 590 divorced mothers and fathers who shared the physical care of their children and 590 who had traditional mother custody. It examines three areas: (1) the social characteristics of the families in the survey - their education, occupations, income and family composition; (2) the living conditions of the families: residential stability and adequacy, the formation of a new…
The Stability of Child Physical Placements Following Divorce
This study uses administrative data from the Wisconsin Court Record Database, linked with survey data collected from mothers (n= 789) and fathers (n= 690), to describe the living arrangements of children with sole mother and shared child physical placement following parental divorce. Contrary to prior research, results provide little evidence that children with shared placement progressively spend less time in their father's care. We find that, o…

Six hundred secondary students attended three daytime performances and 486 returned a Likert‐scaled ques…

Legal and Social Differences Between Men and Women Who Kill Intimate Partners
This study of the differences between 23 men and 18 women who were convicted of partner homicide in Missouri found that the women were more likely to be injured and to seek medical attention as a result of the battering they received than were the men and had a higher level of fear of the batterers before they killed them. Furthermore, the modal sentence for these women was more severe than the modal sentence for the men

Differential Utilization of the Health Care Delivery System by Members of Ethnic Minorities
Research and statistical reports of the 1960's strongly attested to the underutilization of the health care delivery system by members of ethnic minorities. For example, a 1968 national report on hospital utilization showed that a larger proportion of white persons was hospitalized than were persons of 'color.'I This was found to be true regardless of sex and age; but "... as family income increased, the rate for white persons and those of other …

Racial Identification Versus Professional Identification
For close to a decade, members of the social work profession, who also were members of a minority race, have been confronting the profession with their perception that social work has not addressed adequately the needs of their racial groups. The fact that members of one group (a minority race) confronted another group (the social work profession) in which they also held membership signaled the strong and serious conflict between a person's ident…
A Serendipitous Relationship Between Theory Modification and a Study of Staff Development
There are instances in which the guiding impetus to a study is a very practical problem, the answers to which are expected to have immediate applicability. Although the practical purpose is accomplished, at the study's end comes the recognition that perhaps the most important contribution of the investigation had been the uncovering of theoretical implications. The above serendipitous process is applicable to the following report of a limited stu…

Influences on the early lute songs of John Dowland
In 1597 John Dowland published The First Booke of Songes or Ayres ...,1 the work which marks the beginning of the flourishing school of English lutenist song writers. Appearing as it did at the very height of the madrigal's popularity in England, this lute-song genre is all the more interesting by virtue of its independence and immense popularity. Yet, like the madrigal, it enjoyed a relatively short, brilliant life; the publication of some thirt…
Clarification of the instigation to action concept in the frustration-aggression hypothesis
30 grade school children were placed in a pseudo-game situation where the E could thwart the S at any desired distance from the goal without the S realizing the arbitrary nature of the thwarting. The S is aware of distance to the goal at all times. A measure of an aggressive expression of frustration is made by determining the force S uses to push a plunger to silence a buzzer which sounds at the end of the trial. The findings seem to suggest tha…
