The psychometric properties of the ADHD rating scale—5 for children and adolescents, home version for Sudan
There is a lack of universal scales for tracking ADHD symptoms in the home for children/adolescents in the Sudanese context. For this reason, this study aimed to validate the ADHD Rating Scale-5 for Children and Adolescents, Home Version for use by parents in Sudan to assess their children for ADHD. This scale is widely used by parents to assess their children aged 5-17 years for ADHD in the home environment. The current study involved 3,742 Suda…
Improvement of serum folate status in the US women of reproductive age with fortified iodised salt with folic acid (Fisfa study)
Objective: Mandatory folic acid fortification of enriched grains has reduced neural tube defect prevalence in several countries. We examined salt as an additional vehicle for folic acid fortification. The primary objective was to examine the change in serum folate concentration after 1 month of consumption of fortified iodised salt with folic acid (FISFA) among women of reproductive age. The secondary objectives were to examine (1) the feasibilit…

International differences in the speed of cognitive development
The Simber Effect refers to the phenomenon whereby, in Arabic countries, young children have an IQ that is little different from that of Western children but that these differences increase throughout childhood culminating in a difference of around 20 points by adulthood. The true nature of this phenomenon is revealed by an examination of 125 samples from all around the globe measured with Raven's Progressive Matrices. We show that in many cases …
Factor structure in Raven’s Progressive Matrices Plus in sub-Saharan Africa – Benin and Djibouti
A recent meta-analysis identified factor structures in IQ-test results from non-western nations similar to those found in samples from western countries, with mostly strong loadings on a general factor. In this study, we identified the factor structure on Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices Plus (SPM+) in two samples of school children from Benin (n = 3 560) and Djibouti (n = 2 768). The SPM+ gained good overall reliabilities in both countries …

VegasStrong
This article examines the response to the 1 October, 2017, mass shooting in Las Vegas by both the city and its National Hockey League team, the Golden Knights. In analyzing these responses, we argue that the Golden Knights’ memorialization efforts, while operating within a familiar public relations script of the sporting commercialization of memorial, productively turned T-Mobile Arena into a space, however sanitized, for the enactment of rituals…
Health Expenditure Concentration and Characteristics of High-Cost Enrollees in CHIP
Devising effective cost-containment strategies in public insurance programs requires understanding the distribution of health care spending and characteristics of high-cost enrollees. The aim was to characterize high-cost enrollees in a state's public insurance program and determine whether expenditure inequality changes over time, or with changes in cost-sharing policies or program eligibility. We use 1999-2011 claims and enrollment data from th…
Adverse Selection in the Children’s Health Insurance Program
This study investigates whether new enrollees in the Alabama Children's Health Insurance Program have different claims experience from renewing enrollees who do not have a lapse in coverage and from continuing enrollees. The analysis compared health services utilization in the first month of enrollment for new enrollees (who had not been in the program for at least 12 months) with utilization among continuing enrollees. A second analysis compared…
Tolstoy and Schopenhauer and War and Peace
This essay is an analysis of the influence that Schopenhauer’s philosophy had upon Tolstoy during his writing of the novel War and Peace . It is generally conceded that Schopenhauer’s ideas had a deep impact upon Tolstoy during the writing of Anna Karenina , however, the case of War and Peace is more complex and contested. Some have maintained that War and Peace possesses an essentially “optimistic” perspective on life, and that Tolstoy shifted h…

Hip fractures remain highly debilitating events and pose significant challenges for the financing of public health insurance programs
The Lipid-Lowering Properties of Red Yeast Rice
Red yeast rice is an over-the-counter supplement, long used in China, that has shown lipid-lowering effects in trials. It has become popular among Americans but, until regulation and standardization improve, its use will remain controversial
Analyzing the Affordances of Mobile Technologies for Informal Science Learning
Parent-child interactions, and particularly parent-child conversations, in Informal Science Institutions (ISIs) have a critical role in helping to shape children's ways of thinking about science and about the world. The incorporation of mobile technology into ISIs opens up new possibilities for supporting informal learning processes, but little attention has been given to how the addition of such technology might affect the parent-child dynamic, …

It examines three forms of repression—torture, disappearance, and death—and the consequences these have had for victims and family members. Damage to victims is conceptualized in terms of “extreme traumatization,” and psychotherapeutic work with the victim…
