Organizational Behavioral Integrity: Employees’ Reactions to Misalignment Between Organizational Values and Practices
Sweatshops and Labour Law: The Ethical and Legal Implications of Ignoring Labour Law in Developing Countries
Academic defenders of sweatshops argue that disregarding labour rights will result in increased welfare in the developing nations where transnational corporations (TNCs) operate. They argue that TNCs should ignore local labour laws in the best interests of the poor. In this article we criticise this ‘ignore the law’ position regarding sweatshops on three separate grounds. First, it fails to acknowledge the demands for businesses to respect the ru…

Articulatory Variability is Reduced by Repetition and Predictability
Repeating the movements associated with activities such as drawing or sports typically leads to improvements in kinematic behavior: these movements become faster, smoother, and exhibit less variation. Likewise, practice has also been shown to lead to faster and smoother movement trajectories in speech articulation. However, little is known about its effect on articulatory variability. To address this, we investigate the extent to which repetition…
Lexical frequency co-determines the speed-curvature relation in articulation
The relation between speed and curvature provides a characterization of the spatio-temporal orchestration of kinematic movements. For hand movements, this relation has been reported to follow a power law with exponent -1/3. The same power law has been claimed to govern articulatory movements. We studied the functional form of speed as predicted by curvature using electromagnetic articulography, focusing on three sensors: the tongue tip, the tongu…
On the Division of Moral Labour for Human Rights Between States and Corporations: A Reply to Hsieh
In a series of previous articles I have defended the claim that there are robust, theoretical justifications for concluding that corporations have human rights obligations and that those obligations are distinct from the larger set of human rights obligations that are properly attributed to states. Hsieh claims that corporations do not have human rights obligations. In this reply it is argued that even if one takes what Hsieh refers to as an ‘ins…
Corporations and Human Rights Obligations
The claim that corporations have human rights obligations remains contentious and can be fraught with confusion. This article synthesizes existing corporate human rights theory and responds to objections to the idea that transnational corporations (TNCs) have human rights obligations. The argument proceeds in three stages. The first section describes the different forms TNCs take and explains why TNCs are properly understood as moral agents respo…

Compensation, Ethics Of
Questions of how to determine what pay is deserved for a particular job, wage limits and wage equity comprise the main categories of dispute in regard to ethical compensation practices. In light of the means‐end principle, at a minimum employee compensation should be determined by qualities of individual workers, notably effort, productivity, education, exposure to danger, and the relative value of one's work to others. Calculations based on thes…
Sweatshops
The term “sweatshop” is typically used to denote a factory where workers are subjected to working conditions that harm their well‐being (e.g., dangerous health and safety conditions, extremely low wages, extremely long work hours, physical or psychological abuse by supervisors, and disregard for local labor laws). The article outlines the debate between those who argue that sweatshops are necessary for developing countries to attract much needed …
The Ethics of Global Climate Change
Global climate change is one of the most daunting ethical and political challenges confronting humanity in the twenty-first century. The intergenerational and transnational ethical issues raised by climate change have been the focus of a significant body of scholarship. In this new collection of essays, leading scholars engage and respond to first-generation scholarship and argue for new ways of thinking about our ethical obligations to present a…
