  • Effects of input frequency and microvariation on knowledge of negative inversion in L2 English

    Open Access•Tom Rankin, Thomas Wagner•ARTICLE•Linguistic Approaches to…•2025

The present study investigates whether L2 learners of English distinguish between (un)grammatical word orders after fronted negative adverbials to identify negative inversion. Previous research on transfer and resetting of verb second (V2) in L1 German–L2 English is extended to explore residual V2 in the form of negative inversion. An acceptability judgment task elicited sentence ratings from advanced German-speaking learners of English for front…

  • I usually just rely on my intuition and go from there.” pedagogical rules and metalinguistic awareness of pre-service EFL teachers

    Open Access•Tom Rankin, Thomas Wagner•ARTICLE•IRAL - International Review of…•2025•References: 24

The present study explores Austrian pre-service EFL teachers’ language awareness. The negative polarity properties of ‘any’ are investigated. These are informative since some of the grammatical constraints are taught in EFL instruction while others are not. The research question addresses whether pre-service teachers’ knowledge is constrained by pedagogical rules. 66 pre-service EFL teachers rated eight sentence types illustrating varying grammat…

  • Input and competing grammars in L2 syntax

    Open Access•Tom Rankin•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2022•References: 3

Grammar competition has been proposed as a model for second language (L2) acquisition. Variational Learning provides a framework within which to investigate the idea of grammar competition as the model requires a marriage of quantitative properties of the input with Universal Grammar. A diachronic variational model of grammar competition is extended to second language acquisition (L2A) to explore verb-second word order optionality in L2 English. …

  • Language for life

    Tom Rankin, Martin Stegu•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2018

Editorial - Special Issue: Languages for Life - Eduactional, Professional and Social Contexts: Selected papers from the 13th International Conference of the Association for Language Awareness, WU Vienna, July 2016

  • Beyond poverty

    Open Access•Tom Rankin, Sharon Unsworth•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 1

A generative approach to language acquisition is no different from any other in assuming that target language input is crucial for language acquisition. This discussion note addresses the place of input in generative second language acquisition (SLA) research and the perception in the wider field of SLA research that generative SLA ‘ignores’ the input. This impression may have arisen because generative SLA researchers have tended not to systemati…

  • Variational learning in L2

    Tom Rankin•ARTICLE•Linguistic Approaches to…•2014

This study examines the interpretation of constituent wh -questions in L2 English by learners whose L1 is Austrian German. Austrian German and English share identical surface word order patterns for a range of question forms, but with distinct semantic interpretations. Non-target patterns of interpretation show that the learners ay high levels of proficiency continue to optionally parse English questions with the L1 syntax. The continued presence…

  • The transfer of V2

    Open Access•Tom Rankin•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

This article investigates the transfer of verb-second syntax (V2) from L1 German and Dutch into L2 English. A comparative learner corpus analysis between L1 German, Dutch and French, and native English writing reveals that the German and Dutch speakers produce distinct patterns of inversion in declarative clauses, indicating the transfer of V2. They produce non-target subject–auxiliary inversion and copula inversion. However, other reflexes of V2…

  • Marginal prepositions in learner English

Tom Rankin, Barbara Schiftner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2011•Cited by: 1

This paper illustrates the use of learner corpus data to inform language teaching. A comparative interlanguage analysis of a specific class of complex and marginal prepositions in a range of L1 German learner corpora is presented. The comparison shows that, in native English, prepositions in the semantic field of “reference” and “aboutness” are used in distinct structural and collocational environments, while the learner data shows a greater degr…

  • Dreams and Songs of the Noble Old

Tom Rankin, Alan Lomax•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1996

Alan Lomax's examination of the talents and wisdom of elderly musicians, singers, and story-tellers, who perform not for fame or fortune but to preserve and share their culture

  • Powerhouse for God

Joe Wilson, Barry Dornfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1992

Powerhouse for God is a portrait of an old-fashioned Baptist preacher John Sherfy, his family, and their church in Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains. Audiences who were born and raised among old-time southern Baptists say this film captures the fierce preaching, determined singing, autobiographical witnessing, and stern doctrine that characterizes these religious communities
