Engaged or just compliant? A person-centered investigation of the dimensionality and structure of student engagement
Recent research has proposed agentic engagement as a fourth dimension of student engagement, alongside behavioural, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. The current study used latent profile analysis to examine patterns in how these four dimensions manifest in classroom learning. The modelling accounted for overall levels of engagement as well as their specific types using bifactor confirmatory factor analysis. Data were collected from 1,199 high…
The support of autonomy, motivation, and music practice in university music students: A self-determination theory perspective
Practice may be the single most important activity that musicians can use to improve their performance. Yet practice requires significant effort and can sometimes feel difficult or unenjoyable. For this reason, substantial motivational resources are required to sustain consistent, high-quality practice over long periods. In this study, we used self-determination theory to study the kinds of motivation that predict practice behavior and the potent…
Cooperative Security in the Asia-Pacific: Canadian Track-two Initiatives, 1989–2005
Between 1989 and 2005, Canadian academics and officials initiated significant programs to promote security—both cooperative and human—in Asia. The distinctive features were Canadian leadership, resource commitments, and ambitions to advance inclusive “track-two” dialogue, broaden the scope of security discussions beyond conventional defence matters, and advance Canada's role in the region. This is a chronicle of two major Canadian initiatives, th…
Characterisation of Modular Polyketide Synthases Designed to Make Pentaene Analogues of Amphotericin B
Glycosylated polyene macrolides are important antifungal agents that are produced by many actinomycete species. Development of new polyenes may deliver improved antibiotics. Here, Streptomyces nodosus was genetically re-programmed to synthesise pentaene analogues of the heptaene amphotericin B. These pentaenes are of interest as surrogate substrates for enzymes catalysing unusual, late-stage biosynthetic modifications. The previous deletion of am…

Load reduction instruction: Exploring its applicability in a Chinese-speaking secondary school context
Load Reduction Instruction (LRI) is an instructional framework aimed at managing cognitive demands of learning. This study explored the applicability of LRI beyond English-language contexts in a Chinese-language sample of 1,166 secondary school students from 60 classrooms in Taiwan. Findings supported the viability of LRI and its component factors, correlations with engagement and achievement, and measurement invariance with an English-speaking s…
Multi-tier archetypes to characterise British landscapes, farmland and farming practices
Due to rising demand for both food and environmental services, agriculture is increasingly required to deliver multiple outcomes. Characterising differences, across agricultural landscapes, via the identification of broad archetypal groupings, is an important step in exploring spatial patterns in the capacity of land to deliver these potentially competing functions. Creating characterisations at multiple levels, for landscape and farm management,…
Using a microanalysis intervention to examine shifts in musicians’ self-regulated learning
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of using a self-directed practice diary on conservatory pianists’ self-regulated learning tendencies. We sought to determine whether the implementation of a self-directed practice diary based on the three-phase model of self-regulated learning would lead students to gradually demonstrate more self-regulated learning tendencies across a semester of practicing, and if the type and quality of thei…
Wellness Among University-level Music Students: A Study of the Predictors of Subjective Vitality
For many music students, the transition to university-level studies can be a time characterized by high levels of stress as they adjust to academic standards and the challenges of demanding performance assessments. Given this context, this study investigated the impact of stress on students’ well-being, specifically the facet of subjective vitality, defined in the literature as a feeling of energy and aliveness. Our focus was to explore whether c…

Select Committees: Agents of Change
Some select committees are increasingly adopting campaigning characteristics, acting not just as scrutineers of government but also as high-profile agents of change in the public and private sectors. The popularity of such committees with members, the media and the public means this trend is likely to continue. This will increase the already evident strains on the committee powers and the wider established framework within which committees operat…
Conclusion: So, What Is Good Scrutiny Good For
It would perhaps be wisest not to define the programme of Scrutiny too narrowly until intentions can be judged by performance. —A Manifesto by the Editors, Scrutiny: A Quarterly Review, Volume 1, No. 1, Cambridge University Press, May 1932 The long debate running up to the creation of the departmental select committees in 1979, and continuing after their establishment, has generally been more about what they should be doing than about how they sh…

Psychological Needs and Motivational Outcomes in a High School Orchestra Program
Motivation has formed a core strand of research in music education, reflecting its importance in educational psychology and other skill-based performance domains. Understanding motivation is crucial for explaining students’ achievement, performance, well-being, and intentions to continue participation in (or drop out of) music learning throughout school and into adulthood. In the present study, we addressed the need to better understand motivatio…
Self-determination theory: An approach to motivation in music education
This article provides a conceptual overview of a self-determination theory approach to motivation in music education. Research on motivation in music learning is active and has influenced the field considerably, but it remains theoretically patchy, with a vast array of theoretical perspectives that are relatively disconnected. Reflecting motivation research more generally, music education still lacks a parsimonious, unified theoretical approach t…
Searching for Cooperative Security 2.0: From Security Architecture to Security Order in the Asia Pacific
At a moment of strategic transition in Asia Pacific security, views differ widely on the inevitability of conflict and the prospects of a managed accommodation of great power relations. There is widespread agreement that economic integration is deep and valuable, that a power shift is underway, and that the new array of multilateral institutions are welcome but merely formative. At the end of the Cold War period, there was a creative moment in wh…

Hung Parliaments and the Challenges for Westminster and Whitehall: How to Make Minority and Multiparty Governance Work (with Commentaries by Turnbull, Beith, Evans and Crick)
The return of a hung parliament at the 2010 general election is a serious possibility. But due to Westminster's limited recent experience of parliaments under ‘no overall control’ there is little institutional memory in Whitehall or Westminster, and even less public understanding, of what the implications would be. This article sets out to analyse the principal challenges that would be faced by government, opposition, parliament and the media in …
Factors That Influence Physicians to Practice in Rural Locations: A Review and Commentary
Rural populations remain underserved by physicians, despite various efforts by medical schools and other institutions/organizations to correct this disparity. We examined the literature on factors that influence rural practice location decisions by physicians to determine what opportunities exist along the entire educational pipeline to entice physicians to, and retain them in, rural areas. Results reported in the literature favor a multidiscipli…
Canada and Asia Pacific's Track-Two Diplomacy
Viewed in broad sweep, the most dramatic change in eastern in the past 25 years may be the associational revolution that has accompanied the region's spectacular economic growth and integration. Asian and transPacific relations have been transformed less by changes in regime type and diplomatic initiatives, though there certainly have been examples of both, than by the ways that people and organizations have connected to each other across nationa…

The changing pictures of the relationship between career and family
This paper discusses how male managers perceive the relationship between their careers and family lives. The authors suggest that a typology of perceptions is necessary to describe this relationship. The way individuals perceive the relationship is influenced by the emotional outcomes of work and the relative importance of work in the life of the person. While the former is mostly the consequence of the job‐person fit, the latter is closely linke…

The Effects of General Price Controls in the United States during World War II
This paper estimates a general equilibrium model of suppressed inflation using quarterly U.S. data for the sample period 1942:IV-48:II. It finds that the pricelevel was reduced by at least 30.4 percent and that this suppression of inflation reduced employment by at least 11.7 percent and output by at least 7.1 percent. It also finds that monetary policy could have been equally successful in combating inflation but would not have had the side effe…

Human Security and East Asia: In the Beginning
Security is the absence of anxiety upon which the fulfilled life depends. — Cicero In the pantheon of new security concepts debated in East Asia in the past decade, human security is perhaps the most controversial. It is based on the idea that the individual or community must be at least one of the referent points in answering the eternal questions of security for whom, from what, and by what means
The Emergence of Eastern Asia and Its Implications for Canada
In 1959 Kenneth Waltz made a compelling case in his book, Man, the State and War, that three images or levels of analysis human beings, their national groupings or states, and the international system itselfare central to explaining the origins of war. In the 1990s those of realist persuasion (and others) will find it increasingly useful to explain international behaviour by concentrating on a fourth level somewhere between the state and the inte…
Are Consumers Ricardian? Evidence for the United States
This paper derives three empirical implications of a well-specified model of consumer behavior, a model that nests both Ricardian equivalence and an alternative, non-Ricardian theory. Ricardian equivalence is then tested against this alternative. The tests reveal that Ricardian equivalence cannot be rejected. Copyright 1988 by University of Chicago Press

Getting Global China Right
Canada, Meet Global China’
Atlases in any Canadian home invariably display a vast expanse of blue separating the land masses of Asia and North America. The two continents comfortably occupy different pages, usually in separate sections. We need a new kind of map. Globalization has increased Canada's connections around the world through the multiple bands of diplomacy, commerce, migration, culture, and communication. That new map will shrink oceans, especially the Pacific, a…

The Effects on Output of Money Growth and Interest Rate Volatility in the United States
In October 1979, the Federal Reserve began a policy of disinflation and also stopped stabilizing interest rates. Subsequently, interest rates became much more volatile. Using a methodology advanced by Barro, this paper estimates what this change in policy did to output in the United States. The paper finds that the stagnation of the U.S. economy since 1979 stemmed almost as much from increased interest rate volatility as from reduced money growth…

Discovering History in China. American Historical Writing on the Recent Chinese Past
Serious study of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Chinese history did not really get under way in the United States until after World War II. Since then, scholarly publication has proliferated and a genuine professional field-by far the largest and most active in the West-has taken shape. Now, for the first time, we have a critical, book-length analysis of this development, written by an insider and structured around the leading conceptual appro…
