  • Plato's Republic and the Indo-European Pentadic Ideology

    Open Access•Nick Allen•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2020•References: 6

Similarities between ancient Greek philosophy and Indian philosophy have long been recognized and are usually ascribed to East-West contact. However, when similarities are recognized between Greek and Indian poetic diction or, more generally, between the myths and the poetry of the two cultures, they are often ascribed to Indo-European common origin; and one asks whether the same explanation could apply in philosophy. The two types of explanation…

  • Vedic Sacrifice and the Pentadic Theory of Indo-European Ideology

    Nick Allen•ARTICLE•Religions of South Asia•2015•References: 6

If the Sanskrit language derives from the unattested but reconstructable proto-Indo-European language, ideas expressed in Sanskrit might derive from a reconstructable proto-Indo-European ideology. In fact, a body of comparative work on material from various regions of the ancient Indo-European-speaking world suggests that such a proto-ideology once existed, and that it survived long enough to leave significant traces in the historical sources. Tr…

  • Heroes and Pentads

    Open Access•Nick Allen•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2014•Cited by: 2

Students of the narrative content of Greek epic usually ignore the hypothesis that it shares a common origin with the Sanskrit epic, and even Georges Dumézil, the best known Indo-European cultural comparativist of the last century, emphasized the contrast between the two traditions. However, since Dumézil's death, it has been argued that his ‘trifunctional’ theory of Indo-European ideology needs to be subsumed within a pentadic framework. This fr…

  • The Pāndavas’ Five Journeys and the Structure of the Mahābhārata

    Nick Allen•ARTICLE•Religions of South Asia•2007•References: 3

A number of five-element structures occurring in the Mahabharata can be interpreted as expressing an early Indo European pentadic ideology. But in the main plot of the epic, five journeys, each made by one or more Pandavas, can also be viewed as forming a structure: the initial exile; Arjuna’s visit to the four quarters; the major Pandava exile (including the Great War); Arjuna’s journey during the horse sacrifice; and the Pandavas’ final journey…

  • Varnas, colours, and functions

    Nick Allen•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religionswissenscha…•1998•Cited by: 1

The standard Dumezilian view correlates the three functions in Indo-European ideology with the colours white, red and dark (green, blue or black). The theory that the ideology was pentadic, not triadic, prompts a reconsideration, based on the four varnas of Hindu social ideology, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse in Revelations, and the four disguises used by Cliges in an Arthurian romance. It is concluded that black correlated with the bottom …
