Images of spectral relatedness
When one partner in a couple moves into a nursing home, the sense of shared everyday life and home is disturbed. In this article, we examine how couples respond to radical ruptures in their shared everyday lives, homes, and imagined futures when one partner moves into a nursing home due to severe illness. We draw on the field of imagistic anthropology that attends to the uncertain, ambiguous, and imaginative dimensions of life to capture the ofte…
Data sense-making and communicative gaps on sundhed.dk
This paper examines personal experiences of digital health data on the Danish eHealth platform sundhed.dk. Taking a patient's view, the paper understands data sense-making as an embodied communicative practice. The empirical analysis, consisting of 24 purposefully sampled interviews, is brought together with the conceptual framework describing and unpacking the ambivalences to be found in digital health data experiences into themes of data ambiva…
Productive Uneasiness as a Driver of Knowledge Creation Processes in Humanities-Business Collaborations
Over the last few decades, Danish humanities researchers have become increasingly expected to engage in business collaborations that have an impact beyond academia. Although there is great willingness to work together, humanities-business collaborations are often tense affairs. This calls for a deeper understanding of the collaboration and knowledge creation processes. In this article, we develop the concept of productive uneasiness as a sensitiz…
Mapping Health
This paper explores how Danish citizens experience digital health data and how these in turn affect their understanding of digital health data and their self-understanding as a patient. Previous research on digital health data examines primarily opportunities and challenges as well as structural effects concluding that having access to one's medical data is generally beneficial for patients but also comes with literacy challenges. The aim of this…
Structuring the Self
In this article, I examine experiences of getting an ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnosis in adulthood. I illustrate how getting an ADHD diagnosis is a process in which existential questions are raised; judgements and choices are made; and everyday practices are scrutinised, evaluated and changed. Inspired by an analytical framework offered by anthropologist Cheryl Mattingly and based on interviews with adults diagnosed with …
ADHD and Temporality
ADHD is, I argue, an impairment in sense of time and a matter of difference in rhythm; it can be understood as a certain being in the world, or more specifically, as a disruption in the experience of time and a state of desynchronization and arrhythmia. Through excerpts of interviews with adults diagnosed with ADHD and observations, I illustrate how impairment in time is manifested in an embodied experience of being out of sync. I suggest that th…
