Lay Explanations of Symptoms of Mental Ill Health in Kuwait
The cognitive schemas of 208 subjects were elicited in relation to 12 hypothetical symptoms which are most commonly presented by patients suffering from psychiatric disorder. The Profile of Parasuicide Repeaters in Kuwait
A one-year cohort of 92 parasuicides was followed up at 6 monthly intervals for a period of 2 years since their index parasuicide to study the outcome and evaluate the level of social readjustment. One male patient died of suicide (1.1%) and 18 (19.6%) individuals repeated parasuicide using self-poisoning. Factors Influencing Long-Term Psychiatric Hospitalisation of the Elderly in Kuwait
In this study both psychosocial and clinical aspects of elderly patients were investigated in relation to long hospital stay in the only psychiatric hospital in Kuwait. Patients with longer stay did not differ statistically from short stay patients in distributions of sex, age, nationality, marital status, family system, diagnostic categories or factors blocking patients' discharge from hospital. Some Psycho-Social Aspects of Old People Living Outside Their Families in Kuwait
One hundred and ninety four elderly subjects were studied, 133 of whom were living away from their families, in the only old people's home and in the only psychiatric hospital in Kuwait. Psychosocial Profile of the Parasuicidal Patient in Kuwait
A consecutive sample of 92 parasuicides aged 14-44 years (mean age +/- standard deviation, 22.9 +/- 5.6) was seen during the period December 1984-November 1985 at Kuwait's main teaching general hospital (catchment area 449000 population). Self-poisoning accounted for 85.9%. Their sociodemographic characteristics were consistent with contemporary trends of parasuicidal behaviour reported in other countries. Undesirable recent life events in the period of three months preceding primary depressive illness were studied in two Arabian Gulf countries: Qatar (235 patients) and Kuwait (164 patients).
