  • Violinists Employ More Expressive Gesture and Timing Around Global Musical Resolutions

Aditya Chander, Madeline Huberth et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2022

Performers express musical structure using variations in dynamics, timbre, timing, and physical gesture. Previous research on instrumental performance of Western classical music has identified increased nontechnical motion (movement considered supplementary to producing sound) and ritardando at cadences. Cadences typically provide resolution to built-up tension at differing levels of importance according to the hierarchical structure of music. Th…

  • Expressing melodic grouping discontinuities: Evidence from violinists’ rubato and motion

Open Access•Madeline Huberth, Stacey Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2020

Within phrases, melodies can be perceived as continuous or discontinuous. Large pitch intervals tend to promote the perception of melodic discontinuity, though surrounding pitch contexts can promote or diminish this percept. The present study investigated if performers express discontinuities in rubato and motion. In Experiment 1, audio and motion capture recordings were made of six violinists performing a piece with pairs of segments containing …

  • Stream Segregation and Perceived Syncopation: Analyzing the Rhythmic Effects of Implied Polyphony in Bach’s Unaccompanied String Works

    Open Access•Stacey Davis•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Many movements from Bach's unaccompanied string works contain implied polyphony. Although earlier approaches describe this technique as a way of using arpeggiation to embellish a melodic line, disguise an otherwise unacceptable melodic progression, delay the resolution of dissonance, or create underlying voice-leading patterns, these descriptions cannot account for the variety and complexity of the implied polyphony in these pieces. This paper pr…

  • Unmet Needs for Home and Community-Based Services Among Frail Older Americans and Their Caregivers

Open Access•Banghwa Lee Casado, Kimberly S van Vulpen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2010•Cited by: 18•References: 9

It is important to identify risk factors that may lead to older adults' unmet needs for HCBS. The findings of this study charge researchers to look beyond service utilization and give more attention to service needs among those who did or could not access the services

  • Undercounting Medicaid Enrollment in Maryland: Testing the Accuracy of the Current Population Survey

Open Access•Todd Eberly, Mary Beth Pohl et al.•ARTICLE•Population Research and Policy…•2009•References: 3
