  • A Survey of Preferences for Estate Distribution at Death

Open Access•John Morley, Yair Listokin•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Legal Studies•2026

What do you want to do with your property when you die? This paper presents the results of a survey in which we asked this question to a nationally representative sample of 9000 American adults. We gathered data on respondents' families and then asked them how they would like to divide their property among those they leave behind. We find that people are more ambivalent about gifts to spouses and more generous to nonmarital partners than the law …

  • Cyclones and skinny dolphins

    Open Access•Matthew J Colloff, James R A Butler et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2024

The Pacific region is experiencing accelerating global change with complex interactions amongst multiple drivers, yet the onus for urgent adaptation falls largely on communities. Proponents of adaptation must therefore ensure that communities are empowered and enabled to design and implement their own adaptation plans after project cycles have concluded, and that this capacity is scaled beyond the original focus. To address this challenge, we tes…

  • Bayesian material flow analysis for systems with multiple levels of disaggregation and high dimensional data

Open Access•Junyang Wang, Kolyan Ray et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2024

Material flow analysis (MFA) is used to quantify and understand the life cycles of materials from production to end of use, which enables environmental, social, and economic impacts and interventions. MFA is challenging as available data are often limited and uncertain, leading to an under‐determined system with an infinite number of possible stocks and flows values. Bayesian statistics is an effective way to address these challenges by principal…

John Morley, Alan Partington•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 4

  • Lexical cohesion and rhetorical structure

    John Morley•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2006

Lexical cohesion not only contributes to the texture of a text, it can help to indicate the rhetorical development of the discourse. This article looks at this argument-structuring function of lexical cohesion first by considering single texts using the techniques of classical Discourse Analysis and then by using the methodology of corpus linguistics to examine several million words of text. First, the nature of cohesive links within single artic…
