Seasonal Sedition
In recent years, historians have increasingly drawn attention to the myriad weaknesses that plagued colonial empires during the second half of the nineteenth century. One of these shortcomings was the ease with which contraband traversed their borders. In this regard, environmental knowledge has been highlighted as critical in helping smugglers to skirt attempts at regulation and repression. The challenges faced by these smugglers, however, have …

This article investigates the notion of community in short stories by Wendy Erskine. The definition of community is somewhat capacious, ranging from a social group whose members reside in a specific locality, or a group sharing common characteristics or interests, to a place inhabited by any such group, and when it is used in the North of Ireland, the term can even be potentially divisive. Against a strong semantic and political tendency to prese…

Constitutional Rights in the Irish Home Rule Bill of 1893
In 1893, Prime Minister Gladstone introduced the second Irish home rule bill in parliament. The bill broke with tradition in Britain and the empire, as it included provisions from the bill of rights of the United States. Its significance was clear at the time: it was debated for nine days in the committee stage and, with one minor amendment, it remained part of the bill that passed the Commons. However, the bill was defeated in the Lords and, at …
The Purposes of Land Settlement in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, 1898–1914
This article examines the programme of land surveying and registration that was undertaken by the British-led administration of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in the period 1898–1914. The Legal Secretary, Edgar Bonham Carter, stated that programme was the most important project of his division in this period. Scholars have shown that the programme, known as land ‘settlement’, was used to build alliances with elites and to clarify title for European inv…

Liberalism, Social Democracy and the Value of Property Under the European Convention on Human Rights
In most of Europe, expropriation must comply with the standards set under European human rights law. Article 1 of the First Protocol (‘P1-1’) to the European Convention on Human Rights declares that ‘every natural or legal person is entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of his possessions.’ The European Court of Human Rights has stated that the right would be ‘largely illusory and ineffective’ if it did not guarantee full compensation in all but exc…

The economy of time, and our obligation to spend every hour for some useful end, are what few minds properly realize. Catharine Beecher, A Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841) There were times when I could not afford to sacrifice the bloom of the present moment to any work, whether of the head or hands. Henry David Thoreau, Walden; Or, Life in the Woods (1854) In his seminal 1967 essay "Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism," E. P. Thom…
