  • Public Engagement with Foreign Policy Using “Diplotainment: A Conceptual Exploration and Illustrative Analysis

    Open Access•Paweł Surowiec, Paweł Surowiec-Capell et al.•ARTICLE•Global Studies Quarterly•2025•References: 11

This article advances the debate on the democratising effects of digitalisation on diplomatic contents by examining a newly emergent pathway to public engagement with foreign policy. Our analysis explores the liminal spaces in the conduct of foreign policy, focusing on the digitalisation of the statecraft practice of public diplomacy and transnational activism of late night talk-show hosts, particularly in contesting a norm-breaking turn in a sta…

  • (Un)resolving digital technology paradoxes through the rhetoric of balance

Open Access•Georgiana Grigore, Mike Molesworth et al.•ARTICLE•Organization•2021

The organizational benefits of digital technologies are increasingly contrasted with negative societal consequences. Such tensions are contradictory, persistent and interrelated, suggesting paradoxes. Yet, we lack insight into how such apparent paradoxes are constructed and to what effect. This empirical paper draws upon interviews with thirty-nine responsibility managers to unpack how paradoxes are discursively (re)constructed and resolved as a …

  • Intermediaries and Personas: A radical rhetorical reading of marketing work

    Open Access•Chris Miles•ARTICLE•Persona Studies•2020

This article examines the various ways in which marketing work (in both 'practice' and scholarship) engages with the construction of personas. It positions marketing as a rhetorical enterprise concerned with the establishment of intermediary and liminal positions within society; positions which are designed, as in Jung's description of the persona, to "make a definite impression upon others [...and...] to conceal the true nature of the individual…

  • Development of a Moderated Online Intervention to Treat Social Anxiety in First-Episode Psychosis

    Open Access•Carla McEnery, M H Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Background: It is well established that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a significant clinical problem for individuals with a psychotic disorder. Comorbid social anxiety in individuals with psychosis has been associated with poorer premorbid functioning, increased depression, and a reduced quality of life. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is recommended for people with psychosis as a first-line psychological treatment; however, its focus and eva…

  • Chewing gum moderates the vigilance decrement

    Open Access•Kate Morgan, Andrew J Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 25

We examine the impact of chewing gum on a Bakan-type vigilance task that requires the continual updating of short-term order memory. Forty participants completed a 30-min auditory Bakan-task either with, or without, the requirement to chew gum. Self-rated measures of mood were taken both pre- and post-task. As expected, the vigilance task produced a time-dependent performance decrement indexed via decreases in target detections and lengthened cor…

  • Order effects of ballot position without information-induced confirmatory bias

  • Chewing gum moderates multi-task induced shifts in stress, mood, and alertness. A re-examination

    Open Access•Andrew J Johnson, Rebecca Jenks et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 24

  • Journey into the Neither-Neither: Austin Osman Spare and the Construction of a Shamanic Identity

    Chris Miles•ARTICLE•Pomegranate The International…•2007•References: 2

The English artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956) created a dense and fecund body of work that is built upon a foundation of automatism, the pursuit of a state of Vacuity, and the reification of what Spare termed “Self-Love.” Although a one-time student of Aleister Crowley and clearly influenced by some aspects of Western European esoteric currents, Spare has remained on the margins of the twentieth-century occult revival due both t…

  • Acute effects of meals, noise and nightwork

Open Access•Andrew Smith, Andrew P Smith et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1986•Cited by: 3

An experimental study of the acute effects of meals, noise and nightwork showed that there was a post-meal impairment in detection of targets in a cognitive vigilance task. This was found both during the day and at night, although certain features of the results suggested that the day and night effects were not equivalent. Noise increased the number of false alarms but reduced the post-meal impairment in hit rate. Subjects with low levels of trai…
