Introduction
This essay introduces the theme issue about libertarianism in the Nordics since the 1980s. It sets out the key ambition of our theme issue, namely to de-Americanize and transnationalize the study of libertarianism by approaching libertarianism as a movement and an ideology that has been introduced, translated and adapted into very different regional and national contexts across the world. In so doing, the essay argues that the historical conditio…
The Freedom Front and the welfare state counter revolution
This essay examines the Swedish Freedom Front, created in 1989 by libertarians from the editorial committee of the Nyliberalen magazine. It argues that in its emphasis on cultural, sexual, religious and political freedoms, libertarianism contained a different ideological repertoire from neoliberalism. It compares the construction of a canon of translated neoconservative and neoliberal texts with a popular and vernacular register in youth culture,…
Futures
This co-edited collection of essays examines the increasing centrality of futures and futures-thinking in all disciplines. It provides theoretical perspectives on constructions of futurity, across the arts, humanities, and social sciences, opening up multidisciplinary conversations between them. Bringing together emerging perspectives on the future from diverse disciplinary perspectives including critical theory, design, anthropology, sociology, …
Planning the American Future
This article examines the sociologist Daniel Bell's interest in future research. Future research, to Bell, had as its particular purpose to ensure forms of coordination and steering acceptable to a liberal society. By examining Bell's interest in future research and the activities of the Commission on the Year 2000, the essay proposes that future research played a role in Cold War intellectual history as a particular form of planning for the libe…
"It was as if I wasn't there" - Experiences of everyday racism in a Swedish medical school
The aim of this study was to explore and analyze how cultural/ethnic minority students at a Swedish medical school perceive and make sense of educational experiences they viewed as related to their minority position. We interviewed 18 medical students (10 women, and 8 men), who self-identified as coming from minority backgrounds. Data were collected and analyzed simultaneously, inspired by constructivist grounded theory methodology. The concepts …
Future Weather
This chapter draws on empirical research from an AHRC-funded project entitled Spaces of Experience and Horizons of Expectation: Extreme Weather in the UK, Past, Present and Future, to illustrate the complex historical geographies and politics of 'weather wising' and different forms of weather prognostications. Endfield considers the different ways in which particular historical subjects imagined and articulated knowledge about weather futures and…

Closing the Future
This paper examines a struggle over the future use of Nordic forests, which took place from 2009 to 2012 within a major research program, Future Forests-Sustainable Strategies under Uncertainty and Risk, organized and funded by Mistra, The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research. We explore the role of strategic environmental research in societal constructions of long-term challenges and future risks. Specifically, we draw attenti…
Conclusion
What marks the idea of the future in the post-war period is not, as historians have suggested, a sudden shift from progress to decline after 1973, but rather, a struggle between conceptions of world temporalities as singular or plural. The chapters of this book have shown that the post-war period was marked by heterogeneous and often times directly rivalling conceptions of the world future. These were marked by the opposition between representati…
A New History of the Future? From Conceptual History to Intellectual World History
Chapter 2 argues that historians need to reengage with the future. It sets out an argument for a transnational history of the future, which traces the circulation of forms of predictive knowledge and expertise as part of a powered claim on world futures and as part of a struggle over the “long term.” The chapter revisits Reinhart Koselleck’s futures past argument, and challenges it universalistic dimensions while engaging with a recent historiogr…
Bridging the Iron Curtain. Futurology as Dissidence and Control
East European futurists were part of the transnational networks of futures research. The Ford Foundation sent Daniel Bell on a study trip in 1960 during which he made contact with some of the key milieus of revisionist Marxist thought: the Polska 2000 group led by Andrej Sicinski as well as the group of sociologists under the leadership of Radovan Richta in Prague. After 1968, futurologists helped introduce forms of management and computer scienc…
Arctic Futures
The Arctic region is the site of a geopolitical scramble for two major future assets: the opening up of the Northeast Passage and access to enormous gas reserves. Meanwhile, many other possible futures define the ongoing struggle to establish claims to the Arctic among a variety of ‘Arctic nations’, including the rights of indigenous people, the preservation of pristine nature, future tourism, and the reestablishing of historical connections with…
The Future of the World. The World Futures Studies Federation and the Future as Counter Expertise
Chapter 8 explores the making of futures studies as a counter reaction to futurology and protest against the Cold War world order. Taking as its focus the World Futures Studies Federation, created by the West German journalist and peace activist Robert Jungk and the philosopher and international relations theorist Johan Galtung, the chapter returns to futurism as an interrogation into the nature of humanity, and to the future as a fundamental uto…
Futures of Liberalism. The Congress for Cultural Freedom and Futurology as a Transnational Space
The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) took up the theme of the future from its very first seminars devoted to the future of liberty and the role of planning in post-industrial societies. The phrase the “future of liberty” referred not only to the Cold War struggle, but also to the idea that expanding state structures and new patterns of action in liberal democracies posed new conditions for individual freedom and required new means of coordinat…
The Future of the World
The book is devoted to the intriguing post-war activity called—with different terms—futurism, futurology, future research, or futures studies. It seeks to understand how futurists and futurologists imagined the Cold War and post-Cold War world and how they used the tools and methods of future research to influence and change that world. Forms of future research emerged after 1945 and engaged with the future both as an object of science and as an …
Planning the Future of World Markets
The idea of planning economy and engineering social life has often been linked with Communist regimes’ will of control. However, the persuasion that social and economic processes could and should be regulated was by no means limited to them. Intense debates on these issues developed already during the First World War in Europe and became globalized during the World Economic crisis. During the Cold War, such discussions fuelled competition between…

The Struggle for the Long-Term in Transnational Science and Politics
This book reconsiders the power of the idea of the future. Bringing together perspectives from cultural history, environmental history, political history and the history of science, it investigates how the future became a specific field of action in liberal democratic, state socialist and post-colonial regimes after the Second World War. It highlights the emergence of new forms of predictive scientific expertise in this period, and shows how such…
Gouverner le « long terme
Governing the future
This paper is a historical study of two institutions devoted to the problem of the future – the Dutch WRR (the Scientific Council for Government) and the Swedish Secretariat for Futures Studies – both created in 1972. While there is a growing interest in the social sciences for prediction, future imaginaries and the governance of risk, few studies have examined historically the integration of the category of the ‘future’ or the ‘long term’ in pol…
The Great Future Debate and the Struggle for the World
In 1964, two researchers at RAND, Olaf Helmer and Theodore Gordon, presented what they argued was a general theory of prediction, a theory that, Helmer boasted, would “enabl[e] us to deal with socio-economic and political problems as confidently as we do with problems in physics and chemistry.” Work had begun at RAND in the early 1960s to find a systematic and scientific approach to the future. Computers had made it possible to “amass all availab…
The Library and the Workshop
This book offers a detailed account of the way that social democracy today makes sense of capitalism. In particular, it challenges the idea that social democracy has gone "neoliberal," arguing that so-called Third Way policies seem to have brought out new aspects of a thoroughgoing social interventionism with roots deep in the history of social democracy. Author Jenny Andersson expertly develops the claim that what distinguishes today's social de…

Between Growth and Security
This book discusses the components of this ideological turnaround from Swedish social democracy's post-war notion of a strong society, to its notion of a Third Way in the early 1980s. It is a novel and innovative contribution to the history of Swedish social democracy and recent developments in the Swedish welfare state, and it also sheds light on contemporary social policy debates.
The People's Library and the Electronic Workshop
This article explores the role of ideological heritages-ideologies past-in the political discourse of the Third Way and points to the divergence between social democratic parties in their interpretation of change. The cases are New Labour and the Swedish SAP, cases that display important differences in interpretations of the knowledge economy and its implications for social change. The people's library and the electronic workshop, as the metaphor…
