  • Is Andrzej Duda the President of Poland? Legality of Presidential Elections in Poland in 2020 – Chosen Aspects

Open Access•Jakub Zielinski, Jakub Aleksander Zieliński•ARTICLE•Annales Universitatis Mariae…•2024

The article presents results of a legal analysis of the most important actions aimed at holding presidential elections in Poland of 2020. The results show that although the May elections were legal, the June-July elections were carried out with no valid legal basis. At the end of the article theoretical political conclusions are drawn. One of them is that according to Georg Jellinek’s theory of the state the Polish Republic may not exist anymore

    Open Access•Marcin Kleibert, Beata Mrozikiewicz‐Rakowska et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a breakdown of the system of DFU patient care. This retrospective national cohort study analyses the epidemiological status of DFU patients in relation to urgent and elective hospitalizations, amputation rates, and deaths in Poland from 2017 to 2019, and during 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. The data were obtained from national medical records gathered by the National Health Fund (NHF). Discharge diagnoses w…

  • Fluid Party Systems, Electoral Rules and Accountability of Legislators in Emerging Democracies

    Open Access•Kazimierz M Slomczynski, Goldie Shabad et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 36

Does the system of repeated parliamentary elections function as a mechanism of political control in new democracies with fluid party systems? Moreover, does electoral format affect the degree to which voters are able to hold legislators accountable for their performance in office? In addressing these questions, we use a new database on all legislative incumbents and all parliamentary elections that have taken place in Ukraine since 1994. Our find…

  • Legislative accountability in a semi-presidential system

    Dinissa Duvanova, Jakub Zielinski•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The central proposition of modern democratic theory is that repeated elections function as a mechanism of accountability. The underlying logic behind this claim is simple: if politicians want to be

  • Electoral Control in New Democracies

    Open Access•Jakub Zielinski, Kazimierz M Slomczynski et al.•ARTICLE•World Politics•2005•Cited by: 41•References: 35

How do fluid party systems that exist in many new democracies affect democratic accountability? To address this question, the authors analyze a new database of all legislative incumbents and all competitive elections that took place in Poland since 1991. They find that when district-level economic outcomes are bad, voters in that country punish legislators from a governing party and reward legislators from an opposition party. As a result, electo…

  • Translating Social Cleavages into Party Systems

    Open Access•Jakub Zielinski•ARTICLE•World Politics•2002•Cited by: 43•References: 4

This article focuses on new democracies in Eastern Europe and addresses two questions about the translation of social cleavages into political oppositions. The first question concerns the translation of preexisting cleavages: does the evolution of new party systems influence the politicization of social conflicts? The second question concerns the translation of new social cleavages, that is, cleavages that emerge once a party system freezes: can …

  • Transitions from Authoritarian Rule and the Problem of Violence

    Open Access•Jakub Zielinski•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This article asks why some attempts at democratization trigger a military intervention while others end peacefully. The author argues that the cause of violence lies in a miscommunication within the government rather than in an intransigence of the opposition. A formal model is analyzed in which opposition, reformers, and military bargain over the extent of democratization. The reformers are better informed than the opposition about the military'…

  • The Polish transition to democracy

    Open Access•Jakub Zielinski•ARTICLE•European Journal of Sociology•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This article present a gametheoretic model of the transition to democracy in Poland. The events in Poland are conceptualized as a strategic game between a government and an opposition. The transition is modeled as a sequence of intentional decisions about political arrangements. During the 1980s Poland went through three such arrangements: dictatorship, broadened dictatorship, and democracy. Each one is understood as a game-theoretic equilibrium.…
