  • Becoming a Primatologist in High School

Open Access•Naruki Morimura, Sugagiri TABATA et al.•ARTICLE•Primate Research•2020

In school, students often experience a gap between theory and practice in many scientific subjects. A national assessment on academic ability in Japanese compulsory education has revealed a decline in students' motivation, achievement, and satisfaction towards science. To counter this, the Primate Society of Japan has promoted various primatology school programs by organizing visiting lectures and poster presentation awards at annual conferences …

  • What makes a long tail short? Testing Allen's rule in the toque macaques of Sri Lanka

Open Access•Michael A Huffman, Raveendra Kumara et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2020

Allen's rule (1877) predicts ecogeographical anatomical variation in appendage proportions as a function of body temperature regulation. This phenomenon has been tested in a variety of animal species. In macaques, relative tail length (RTL) is one of the most frequently measured appendages to test Allen's rule. These studies have relied on museum specimens or the invasive and time‐consuming capturing of free‐ranging individuals. To augment sample…

  • Bonobos’ saliva remaining on the pith of terrestrial herbaceous vegetation can serve as non-invasive wild genetic resources

Open Access•Shintaro Ishizuka, Yoshi Kawamoto et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2019

  • Mitochondrial DNA analyses and ecological niche modeling reveal post‐LGM expansion of the Assam macaque ( Macaca assamensis ) in the foothills of Nepal Himalaya

Open Access•Laxman Khanal, Mukesh Kumar Chalise et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2018

Genetic diversity of a species is influenced by multiple factors, including the Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles and geophysical barriers. Such factors are not yet well documented for fauna from the southern border of the Himalayan region. This study used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences and ecological niche modeling (ENM) to explore how the late Pleistocene climatic fluctuations and complex geography of the Himalayan region have shaped …

  • An SNP marker at the STAT6 locus can identify the hybrids between rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and long-tailed macaques (M. fascicularis) in Thailand

  • Genetic diversity within and among gelada (Theropithecus gelada) populations based on mitochondrial DNA analysis

    Open Access•Takayoshi Shotake, Weerachai Saijuntha et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 5

We studied genetic characteristics within and among gelada (Theropithecus gelada) populations inhabiting the southern and northern plateaus of Ethiopia. Twenty-one mtDNA haplotypes were identified. Geladas on the southern plateau were genetically separated from those on the northern plateau, with a large differentiation as indicated by Fst values of 0.665–0.917. The difference between the subspecies (T. g. gelada and T. g. obscurus) on the northe…

  • How did bonobos come to range south of the congo river? Reconsideration of the divergence of Pan paniscus from other Pan populations

Open Access•Hiroyuki Takemoto, Yoshi Kawamoto et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2015

While investigating the genetic structure in wild bonobos, 1 we realized that the widely accepted scenario positing that the Pleistocene appearance of the Congo River separated the common ancestor of chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) and bonobos ( P. paniscus ) into two species is not supported by recent geographical knowledge about the formation of the Congo River. We explored the origin of bonobos using a broader biogeographical perspective by ex…

Protein polymorphisms of the crab‐eating macaque ( Macaca fascicularis ) on the island of Mauritius in the southwest Indian Ocean were examined electrophoretically for 201 blood samples. All of the variant types detected were those found previously in the Asian populations. Genetic variability of the island population was estimated to be P poly = 16% and H = 6.5%, which was lower than that of the Asian populations. A tendency that a small number …
