Bringing Critical Femininities Into Conversation With Critical Masculinities in Family Science
In this article, a feminist family scholar and a critical femininities scholar bring critical femininities into conversation with critical masculinities within Family Science. Using theoretical frameworks from critical femininities scholarship, we developed a diagnostic tool to help scholars engage with critical femininities while reading critical masculinities scholarship. In so doing, we ask if the feminine is valued, obscured, and/or underexpl…
The Elle Woods effect
Using a case study of Elle Woods from Legally Blonde (2001), I assert that sorority communities are a prime example of the powerful impact of femmephobia in popular culture. Drawn from qualitative interview data with sorority women as well as media analysis and autoethnographic reflection, I use femme theory (Hoskin, 2017) and “girling” (Ahmed, 2017) to analyze a trend within my data that I label the “Elle Woods Effect.” Ultimately, I assert that…
Femininity, Body Size, and (Mis)Fitting in Rock Climbing Culture
What power relations exist at the intersections of femininity and fatness in rock climbing? In this article, we theorize our experiences with indoor recreational rock climbing focusing on climbing culture’s tendency toward femmephobia, sizeism, and body normativity. Using fat studies and critical femininities, we unite theory and personal experience to examine how the sport uses “fit-ness” to bring climbers into alignment with an idealized form. …
Breaking the Silence
Six years of silence and waiting sit between us. Surviving within the infrastructure of the United States, we delay our marriage for years because of how it would impact our income-driven repayment plans and our eligibility for Medicaid, aware that we can go to the courthouse instead of having a wedding if there is (another) federal threat to our right to marry. I think fleetingly about how different our worlds would be if your access to gender-a…
Negotiating relationships with powerfulness
Finding power within femininity, typically through masculinised dimensions of femininity, has long been a mechanism through which to recuperate feminised identities, experiences, and aesthetics within feminism. However, privileging powerfulness to the exclusion of dimensions of powerlessness, such as vulnerability, pathologizes femininity and maintains masculinism within feminism. Using queer femme autoethnography alongside intersectional feminis…
What do glitter, pointe shoes, & plastic drumsticks have in common? Using femme theory to consider the reclamation of disciplinary beauty/body practices
This article focuses on the lived experiences of femme identity. I use the history of femme, growing out of a specifically lesbian context wherein femininity is queered through its refusal of heterosexual consumption to approach the broader messiness between femme-ininity and normative femininity. I draw on feminist and queer analytics, femme theory, and autotheory to argue that femme-ininity is always liminal and may be better understood not as …
