Interactive nature of fat activism and fat studies within and outside academia
This essay introduces the special issue of Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society on “Fat Activism” by describing the interactive nature of fat activism and fat studies both within and outside academia. It asserts the need to create activist and academic projects attendant to the complexities of overlapping oppressions, identities, and communities within fat liberationist movements
Intersections of Multiple Oppressions
This think piece on the intersectionality of multiple oppressive markers incorporates critical race feminism, fat studies, body/embodiment studies, and dis/ability studies. It discusses the cases of two African Americans deemed irresolvable nuisances, treated as threats to police, and dealt with, with undue force, resulting in their untimely deaths. Discursive entanglements, diffractive readings
Building on Barad’s (2007) discursive entanglements, we explore discussions about weight-loss surgery among Girth & Mirthers, a nationwide social club of big gay men ostracized from the larger gay community because of their size. They promote size acceptance, but are suspicious of surgeons promising social normality through gastric bypass. Girth & Mirth (G&M) is a social group for big gay men who face exclusion and discrimination from both mainstream and gay communities. Based on extensive ethnographic research and interview data, we consider a variety of the group's activities, including gatherings at coffeehouses, participation in a gay pride parade, and a national carnivalesque weekend retreat. Social Smoking
Social smokers manage the conflicting aspects of their liminal identities by negotiating complex roles of performance and exchange. Using a combination of methods, including both participant observation of cultural performances and informal interviews, to elicit lay theories and accounts of self-conscious practices, this project examines social actors, self-defined as nonsmokers (or reformed smokers), who engage in recreational tobacco use.
