  • Dynamite or Damp Squib?—An Assessment of Equal Value Law

    Open Access•Jeanne Gregory•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Recognising the potentially explosive impact of the law on equal pay for work of equal value, the article examines the ways in which the legislative framework itself, in combination with some far-reaching changes in the organisation of the labour market, has had a stultifying effect on this potential. Within the feminist movement, there is profound scepticism about the value of research into the workings of state institutions, particularly the legal system. When feminists engage with the law, it is argued, they invariably concede too much; the rules of engagement are drawn in a way that contains the feminist challenge while reaffirming the power of law (Smart, 1989). It is not difficult to find examples in the history of feminist campaigns whi…

  • Sex, Race and the Law: Legislating for Equality

    Lon Fleming, Jeanne Gregory•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•1988

In the last two decades many countries have recognized the existence of widespread and persistent discrimination against women and racial minorities, and have sought to reduce or eliminate discrimination through legislation. In this book Jeanne Gregory examines the British experience in using the law to reduce inequality and assesses what has been done and can be achieved in this way. In Britain, the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and…

  • Equal Pay and Sex Discrimination: Why Women are Giving up the Fight

    Jeanne Gregory•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•1982•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A woman saw a notice in the window of a butcher's shop, stating that two cleaners were required. When she inquired within, she was informed that they really wanted men but knew that they were not allowed to say so on the advertisement. The following day she visited the job centre, reported the occurrence and completed a tribunal application form, complaining of sex discrimination. A few weeks later, she received a visit from a conciliation office…
