  • Clothed in tattoos

Chris Thomas, Chris J Thomas•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2015

George Vason arrived on the island of Tongatapu in 1797, as part of the London Missionary Society's first foray into the Tongan Islands. Instead of creating converts, Vason embraced the Tongan way of life. Overtly framed as a narrative of reclamation, of a “missionary seduced abroad and reclaimed at home”, his travel account in fact seeks to imagine an identity unbound by any culture, including his own. Focusing particularly on Vason's account of…

  • Aping expressions? Chimpanzees produce distinct laugh types when responding to laughter of others

    Marina Davila‐Ro, Marina Davila-Ross et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2011

Humans have the ability to replicate the emotional expressions of others even when they undergo different emotions. Such distinct responses of expressions, especially positive expressions, play a central role in everyday social communication of humans and may give the responding individuals important advantages in cooperation and communication. The present work examined laughter in chimpanzees to test whether nonhuman primates also use their expr…

Euan Hague, Chris Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2001•Cited by: 2

The Social Exclusion Unit (SEU) of the British Government is a recent and innovative response to social problems in the UK. Through an examination of selected publications of the SEU, the article highlights some of the representations of family, work and gender which provide the discursive context in which the SEU operates and to which it, in turn, contributes. The article suggests that perspectives found in the post-1945 welfare state continue t…

  • Political Constructions and Social Realities of Exclusion in Urban Leisure

Euan Hague, Chris Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2000•References: 12

This paper explores some of the tensions between the political constructions of social exclusion in Britain and personal experiences of the problem as reflected in selected patterns of urban leisure. To highlight what we argue are wider incidences of exclusion, the paper draws on a case study of the leisure patterns of elderly women in contrasting urban neighbourhoods in a British city. Using Johnson's (1986) concept of a circuit of culture, the …

    Chris Thomas•ARTICLE•Politique africaine•1998•Cited by: 1
