    Open Access•Nicky Marsh, Daniel Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2025•References: 39

This article examines the relationship of qualitative data to place-based decision-making and the role of data observatories in these emerging debates and practices. Qualitative data enables the understanding and evaluation of the lived and felt experience of place. This article identifies where qualitative data approaches intersect with place-based policy and existing data observatory initiatives. While data observatory initiatives and projects …

  • Levelling Up, affective governance and tensions within ‘pride in place

Open Access•Michael Howcroft, Nicky Marsh et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 54

The ‘pride in place’ mission of the UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda has foregrounded the importance of feelings in local and national development strategies. While pride in place gestures to the emotional symptoms of geographical inequality and the so-called left behind, it does not address their structural causes. This article explores how the lens of pride, and the affective governance it demands, has been used to reimagine place in UK poli…

Open Access•Paul Crosthwaite, Peter Knight et al.•ARTICLE•The Year s Work in Critical and…•2018

This chapter covers recently published work in economic criticism, exploring the interplay in this scholarship between contemporary and historical frames and the methodological approaches of economics and the humanities. It is divided into four sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Narrating the Economy; 3. Economic Histories and Cultures; 4. Economic Humanities.

  • Economic Criticism

Paul Crosthwaite, Peter Knight et al.•ARTICLE•The Year s Work in Critical and…•2017

This chapter covers work in economic criticism published in 2016, and explores how recent contributions to the field draw on existing ways of understanding the relations between culture and the economy, whilst forging new paradigms and syntheses. It is divided into five sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Projections; 3. Reading and Performing the Market; 4. Debt, Derivatives and Growth; 5. Libidinal Economy.

  • Economic Criticism

Paul Crosthwaite, Peter Knight et al.•ARTICLE•The Year s Work in Critical and…•2016

This chapter covers work in economic criticism published in 2015 (or, in one case, 2014), and explores how recent contributions to the field continue to rethink established understandings of the relations between culture and the economy. It is divided into four sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Neoliberalism, Austerity and Resistance; 3. Finance, Feeling and Form; 4. Narrative Economies.

  • Economic Criticism

Paul Crosthwaite, Peter Knight et al.•ARTICLE•The Year s Work in Critical and…•2015

This inaugural chapter on ‘Economic Criticism’ surveys books published (predominantly) in 2013 and 2014 that explore the relations between culture and economics. These relations have been growing preoccupations in critical and cultural theory over the past two decades, and especially since the global financial crisis of 2008. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the state of the field as it currently stands, and, in particular, to indicate…

  • Paradise falls

    Nicky Marsh•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2014

This article examines the way in which credit and debt have been explored since the 2008 crisis: suggesting a formal analogue in which an abstracted financial capital (credit) has been contrasted against its concrete productive counterpart (debt). The first half of the paper traces this contrast through the theoretical vocabularies for credit and debt that have emerged in the wake of the crisis, in which debt has been separated from credit and th…

  • Money'sdoubles

    Nicky Marsh•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2012

This article reads the ambivalence of the doubles that populate Martin Amis' novel Money through the doubles that money itself possesses: specifically the divergence between what have come to be thought of as financial and industrial forms of capital. The form of Amis' novel, I suggest, offers itself as a metaphorical critique of these divided forms, one that seeks to interrupt the deferred logic that has constructed what he has described as mone…

  • Desire and Disease in the Speculative Economy

    Nicky Marsh•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This paper contrasts two kinds of representations of this relationship between crisis and risk, specifically focusing on their metaphorical displacement onto a sexualised and/or bodily discourse. In the first instance the author examines the ways in which the exuberant organic language of finance radically shifted following the financial crisis at the end of 2008, paying particular attention to how the discourses of financial regulation attempted…

  • Infidelity to an Impossible Task

    Open Access•Nicky Marsh•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•2003•References: 6

This paper locates the work and critical reception of the experimental poet Lyn Hejinian within the emerging debates of 'third-wave' feminist critique. It centrally argues that Hejinian's writing at once illuminates and undermines the apparent tensions between a feminist and an anti-foundationalist critical position. It specifically focuses on Hejinian's use of autobiography, as at once gesturing to the limitations of the theoretically naive self…
