Sir William Gowers made three significant choices affecting his sons’ careers, the last perhaps dictating the previous two: he chose Rugby as their public school, Classics as their subject, and entry into the Civil Service for their careers. The public school curriculum, the Classics courses at Oxford and Cambridge, and the entrance examination into the Civil Service were closely linked. Anyone wishing to gain a place as a First Division clerk in…

    Open Access•James E Brady, Ann Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997•References: 2

Recent investigations have documented extensive human breakage, movement, resetting, removal, and caching of speleothems which reflects an unreported aspect of ancient Maya cave utilization. The movement, resetting, and caching of speleothems make it clear that much of the breakage was purposeful. Speleothems appear in excavation contexts at surface sites, and the Petexbatun Regional Archaeological Project demonstrates that reported examples repr…

Some ten or fifteen years ago, when feminists began thinking seriously about psychoanalysis, the most common expression of doubt was: but isn't Freud culturally specific? Weren't the illness and disturbance he described true for the period, but times have changed? Today we have the appearance of a reversal: now that the extent of child sexual abuse is increasingly recognized, some people are asking the other side of the question: if Freud was so …

The financial problems of federalism arise whenever the authority for collecting taxes and receiving other revenues differs from the authority constitutionally charged with dispensing services. They arise most obviously in the five federal members of the Commonwealth, the United States and Switzerland, to mention only the best known examples in the Western world. On a different scale, however, exactly analogous central and regional situations app…

    Ann Scott, A D Scott•ARTICLE•Economica•1950•Cited by: 2

The field of government finance in federal countries poses many problems, and there has recently been a revival in the flow of literature on this subject. The recent contributions of Professor Maxwell' and Mr. Birch2 have emphasised that there exists a financial dilemma which is common to all federal nations. There is, however, a further problem which has not been fully perceived in the existing literature. This further problem is essentially lon…
