  • Materializing Difference: Consumer Culture, Politics, and Ethnicity among Romanian Roma

    Margaret H Beissinger•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2022

Materializing Difference: Consumer Culture, Politics, and Ethnicity among Romanian Roma is an important contribution to Romani studies and research in anthropology, ethnography, and folklore, especially material culture. Based on long-term fieldwork, Péter Berta conducted multi-sited ethnographic research in Romanian Transylvania, primarily among the Gabor Roma. He tells a fascinating tale of traditional Roma and their intricate relationships wit…

  • Lăutar Space: Marriage, Weddings, and Identity among Romani Musicians in Romania

    Open Access•Margaret H Beissinger, Margaret Beissinger•ARTICLE•Martor The Museum of the Romanian…•2020•References: 21

This article treats, through the lens of marriage and nuptial practices, how lăutari (professional male Romani musicians who perform at Romanian weddings) and their families self-identify as Romanianized Roma. Lăutari assume hybrid forms of identity, drawing on both traditional Romani and mainstream Romanian culture as they perpetually create and recreate their own composite sense of “lǎutar space.” Lăutari, like many Roma, preserve basic norms o…

    Open Access•Margaret H Beissinger•ARTICLE•Romani Studies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, I explore how gender, ethnic identity, and education inform career, marriage, and family in the lives of sons and daughters of lăutari (professional Romani musicians) at the intersection of traditional Romani and contemporary Romanian society. Sons are socialized to adopt the occupation of their fathers, becoming professional musicians who will support future families; they perpetuate traditional lăutar …

  • Romani (Gypsy) Music-Making at Weddings in Post-Communist Romania: Political Transitions and Cultural Adaptations

    Open Access•Margaret H Beissinger•ARTICLE•FOLKLORICA - Journal of the…•2010

Anyone attending a traditional wedding in Romania during the communist period, such as in the 1970s or '80s, and returning to such a celebration during the 1990s or early 2000s would immediately notice that, although structurally the wedding ritual proceeds more or less the same now as before, the non-ritual music and dance that currently form part of the festivities are significantly different. Amplified instruments in many cases have replaced a…

Based on fieldwork (primarily in southern Romania), this article treats identity-construction among professional male Romani musicians, investigating in particular the discourse that they generate as they maintain their exclusive vocational niche on the boundaries of intersecting ethnic communities. Seeking to establish the influence of Romani musicians as agents in the construction of their own identity, Beissinger discusses notions that Romani …

Modern social science, shaped by a positivist epistemology, tends to separate facts from values, so religion is often placed outside the realm of legitimate social knowledge, even though in many Muslim societies it continues to shape norms, authority, and public life. This study aims to reconstruct Kuntowijoyo’s Prophetic Social Science as a conceptual-analytical framework within contemporary Islamic social theory. This research is a conceptual p…
