I Just Feel Disconnected”
Research suggests shame plays a mediatory role in the relationship between trauma and psychosis, however, there is limited information on how this may occur. This qualitative study explored how experiences of shame in people living with psychosis is linked to past trauma. Fourteen adults completed semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to develop four themes: (1) shame maintains trauma; (2) trauma-related shame drives di…

Protests as Sites of Learning
Social movements, in Canada and around the world, offer a rich window to study social actors as they struggle for power and justice. Relatively less explored in the academic literature is the role of social movements as a site of learning. In this article, the authors synthesize several theoretical frameworks for social movement learning and apply them to extensive fieldwork, in 2009, during Sri Lankan Tamil protests in Toronto and during Indigen…
The scope of safety in English older adult care homes
Purpose This paper aims to explore the content of Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) from older adult care homes to understand how safety is understood and might be measured in practice. Design/methodology/approach SARs relevant to older adult care homes from 2015 onwards were identified via the Social Care Institute of Excellence SARs library. Using thematic analysis, initial inductive coding was mapped to a health-derived safety framework, the S…
Collecting text messages from college students
Social interaction, particularly in older adolescents, increasingly involves computer‐mediated communication. Although studies of public computer‐mediated communication are increasingly common, studies of private text messaging remain rare. As approaches for obtaining such data evolve with technological advances, developmental scientists need designs in which to use such approaches that reduce sampling biases in both participants and text message…
The association between discrimination and violence among Somali Canadian youth
Analyses were conducted with a sample of 18–30-year-old Somali Canadians to test the association between discrimination and violence-related beliefs and behaviours, whether this association differs by the source of the discrimination, and whether there is a different pattern of effects for men and women. Results indicate that discrimination from within one’s own community is not associated with attitudes towards violence, anti-violence behaviours…

Mussolini’s Boys (and Girls) Gender and Sport in Fascist Italy
The members of the all male Italian team at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games were affectionately called ‘Mussolini’s boys’ in the press. The athletes represented a new, more powerful, and virile Italy. Four years later in Berlin it was the successful Italian women athletes who were praised in the press for being the exponents of ‘Latin athleticism’. What does this mean about women and sport in Fascist Italy and about the construction of a new a…
The limitations of whiteness and the boundaries of Englishness
The focus of this article is the second-generation Irish in England. It is based on data collected as part of the Irish 2 project, which examined processes of identity formation amongst the second-generation Irish population in England and Scotland. The article examines and maps identifications and positionings of second-generation Irish people and discusses how two hegemonic domains - Ireland and England - intersect in the lives of the children …

Family stories, public silence
Formal narratives of history, especially that of colonial oppression, have been central to the construction of national identities in Ireland. But the Irish diasporic community in Britain has been cut off from the reproduction of these narratives, most notably by their absence from the curriculum of Catholic schools, as result of the unofficial ‘denationalisation’ pact agreed by the Church in the 19th century (Hickman, 1995). The reproduction of …

The Schio killings
The incidence of partisans killing Fascists after the Liberation of Italy is a difficult and contested subject in the historiography of that period. This article addresses one particular case—the Schio killings which took place on the night of 6 July 1945—and examines different narratives of the event in the light of the ways in which the struggle for power played out between the Communists, the Allies and the centre-right has dictated the signif…
