The ptolemaic library project
This paper discusses the foundation of the Library of Alexandria, probably to be dated under Ptolemy I, and argues for its location within the temple complex of the Mouseion. Modelled in part on Aristotle’s library in Athens, the Library is placed in its Alexandrian context as a royal project which may have had Egyptian precedents but was nevertheless central to the Greek cultural development of Hellenistic Egypt

On the Trail of the New Left
The politics of the non-aligned Left of the years 1956–1962 have become fashionable of late. Two at least of the writers who were prominent in the journals of the time have published memoirs, and at least two more are in the pipeline. Clancy Segal has published two romans
The Personal and the Political
Sheila Rowbotham: Your new book, Outsiders, suggests to me a general feature of your work—an awareness of class as a general feature of society but also of the cultural nuances which bind or separate people into or between classes. Was there something in your family background

French Jesuit Wealth on the Eve of the Eighteenth-century Suppression
The bankruptcy in 1756 of the major French creditors of Antoine Lavalette, superior of the Jesuit missions of Martinique, resulted in the ‘Lavalette affair’ of 1756–62. During that period, Lavalette borrowed feverishly in an attempt to save his commercial enterprises in the Caribbean, his religious superiors sought to deal with his betrayal of his religious vocation and his mounting debts, and the Jesuits’ enemies gained court orders for the seiz…

General Ricci and the Suppression of the Jesuit Order in France 1760–4
The issue in the series of crises leading to the suppression of the Jesuit order in France in 1764 was the absolute obedience owed under the Jesuit Institute by every French Jesuit to the superior general of the Society of Jesus resident in Rome. On the eve of the suppression, the French law courts and the Crown reasoned that Jesuit subjects of the king of France ought not to owe such obedience to a foreign superior living on foreign soil. In the…

The Persecution of French Jesuits by the Parlement of Paris 1761–71
In the 1760s the parlement of Paris undertook to destroy the Society of Jesus in the central one-third of France which it controlled, and to use its influence to gain the destruction of the order elsewhere. Its immediate victims were the 1,200 Jesuits resident in 42 colleges and other institutions in its own territory in 1761, but it also claimed authority over any of the other 2,200 French Jesuits who had been born in its territory or might ente…

Report of Meeting to pray for Imprisoned Chartists
A large meeting was held on Clerkenwell Green, on last Sunday morning for the purpose of offering up a prayer for the imprisoned Chartists. The placard calling the meeting was directed to Christians of all denominations. A short and appropriate discourse was delivered on the occasion, and was followed by an address from a Chartist brother. The prayer was then read in the most devout and solemn manner, the assembly being uncovered, with which the …

The Crisis of the West: The Marfleet Lectures
In 1910, Mrs. Lydia A. Marfteet endowed this Lectureship in memory of her late husband and as an expression of the regard which she and her husband had for this City and this University. Dorothy Thompson's topic as the Marfleet Lecturer is "The Crisis of the West." "Crisis" is defined as a turning point. In what direction does the arrow point?
Farewell to the Welfare State
In the era of popular conservatism, the Labour movement has abandoned the revolutionary priorities of welfare and community provision, and neglected the growth of “double standards” in the “irresponsible society”
