  • Socialist Feminism

Socialist feminism is a social movement and political philosophy combining the gender politics of women's liberation with the ideals of democratic socialism. Opposed to both centralized state socialism and to capitalist patriarchy, it organized autonomous activist women's groups in the United States from the late 1960s through the mid‐1970s

Although popular culture contrasts men and women as opposites, cross-gender friendships between the sexes are thriving. I agree with other scholars that men's friendships with women are increasing in number, value, and social acceptability in the United States. I argue that we should expand our contexts for understanding cross-gender friendships from dyads or paid bonds to include men and women comrades, coworkers, in-laws, exes, and members of o…

  • Women's Friendships, Feminist Friendships

Judith Kegan Gardiner, Judith Kegan Gardiner Judith Kegan Gardiner•ARTICLE•Feminist Studies•2016

This article analyzes contrasting descriptions and prescriptions for women’s friendships in six recent books in comparison with earlier Second Wave idealizations. “A History” of “the Social Sex,” “Tales of Sisterhoods and Fierce Friendships,” and “In Solidarity: Friendship, Family, and Activism Beyond Gay and Straight” provide optimistic, progressive pictures in comparison with skepticism about “Postfeminist Sisterhood,” while a memoir chronicles…

    Open Access•Judith Kegan Gardiner•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This essay describes paradoxes and contradictions in treatments of masculine psychology in men, masculine women, and female-to-male transgendered persons. Using object-relations psychoanalysis, Nancy Chodorow explained the complementary and opposing psychologies in men and in women, emphasizing competitive and inhibited aspects of masculine psychology. Similar psychological theories are still being advanced today as applicable to most men and wom…

  • Gender and Masculinity Texts: Consensus and Concerns for Feminist Classrooms

    Judith Kegan Gardiner•ARTICLE•NWSA Journal•2003

As a feminist increasingly interested in masculinity studies, I've been thinking about how the turn to gender is shaping feminist scholarship and Women's Studies, looking at new gender textbooks that include more attention to masculinity, and considering how these texts advance or modify feminist interdisciplinary scholarship and agendas for social change. Several new books proclaim that they supersede earlier works of feminist scholarship by app…

Two popular entertainments, the South Park cartoon show and The Blue Man Group theatrical performance, are analyzed as symptomatic of a new configuration of masculinity in the contemporary United States. This masculinity is shaped by young men's ambivalent resistance and accommodation to the consumer culture. It manifests itself in an expulsive anality unlike the bourgeois character traits described by Freud or the polymorphously sensual scatolog…

Jean Rhys is one of the greatest novelists of alienation. Because much of her work has an obviously autobiographical base and because she was relatively obscure during her writing life, she has been treated out of her historical context as an individual and pathological voice, the voice of a female victim. The alienation of her characters has alienated some of her critics who wish to exclude themselves from the experiences about which she writes,…
