TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE Book Reviews 949 economic analysis or an understanding of metal making. One would never suspect from his account, for example, that iron puddling was a backward industry whose contempt for science and quality control was at the root of hundreds of 19th-century accidents and deaths. As noted by Carl W. Condit and others, travel before the Civil War was made hazardous by the inadequacies of the puddlers’ art. Iron bridges col…

The Organization of American Historians
The Organization of American Historians met in Philadelphia in April 1987; I attended three labor-related sessions. "The United Packinghouse Workers of America Oral History Project: Methods and Findings" proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable panel, in part because of the information about the history of the militant, left-leaning United Packinghouse Workers (UPW), but also because of the attention to the practice of oral history. The Quilters: Women and Domestic Art
As Patricia Cooper and Norma Bradley Buferd note in the introduction to their book, The Quilters: Women and Domestic Art, the art of quiltmaking has burst upon the national consciousness since the special exhibit of quilts at the Whitney Museum in 1972. Since that time, a multitude of books on quiltmaking in the United States has been published-histories, how-to references, and collections of color photographs; museums have displayed widely varie…
