  • My Gender Can Get Me Paid If I So Choose

    Open Access•Christopher Rogers, M Christian•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2025•References: 62

In this paper, we explore how non-binary and transgender expressions and identities become commodified within a heteronormative-capitalist society and how their gender becomes the embodiment of progressive values and or sexual desires that are marketed and exploited for profit. Using a critical mixed-methods approach, including in-depth interviews with non-binary and transgender people in the Greater Boston area, we highlight how areas of employm…

  • Don’t Touch My Hair

    Open Access•Christopher Rogers, C D F Rogers•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2022

There is much research on race and schooling focused on punitive discipline, but little attention is paid to how teachers and administrators use minor policies to coerce students to “willingly” adopt hegemonic ideologies, particularly the ones that correspond to Whiteness. In this work, Whiteness is conceptualized as a social concept in which forms of knowledge, skills, and behavioral traits are cultivated for the sake of maintaining White suprem…

  • A comparison of vowel harmony in Xinkan, Jicaquean, and Lencan

Open Access•Christopher Rogers, Barrett Hamp et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2020

The Xinkan, Jicaquean, and Lencan language families are isolates. However, they show similarities in their vowel co-occurrence restrictions within morphemes. This paper compares and contrasts the harmonic patterns in each of these language families and concludes that similarities are likely due to contact between their speakers. This suggests that Xinkan, Jicaquean and Lencan speakers existed in a sort of micro-language area, a small-scale scenar…

  • African American church-based HIV testing and linkage to care

Jennifer M Stewart, Keitra Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2016

The US National HIV AIDS strategy promotes the use of faith communities to lessen the burden of HIV in African American communities. One specific strategy presented is the use of these non-traditional venues for HIV testing and co-location of services. African American churches can be at the forefront of this endeavour through the provision of HIV testing and linkage to care. However, there are few interventions to promote the churches' involveme…

  • Hindu-Christian Dialogue Postponed

    Open Access•Christopher Rogers, C Murray Rogers et al.•ARTICLE•Practical Anthropology•1971

The authors bring out from their own experience the tension that exists between the need for men to respect one another's beliefs and the imperative of the Christian mission to evangelize non-Christians. Non-Christians see ulterior motives in Christians' offers of dialogue. Hindus also feel that Christians are interested in dialogue only at a superficial, intellectual level, rather than in mutually sharing deep spiritual insights
